How to Install Cisco VPN Software: Windows XP

To use VPN with Cornell campus networks and services, you must use Cisco VPN software with an additional configuration (PCF) file installed.

VPN outside the United States: If you plan to take VPN out of the country on a computer or plan to download it while abroad, be aware that the US Department of Commerce restricts the export of cryptographic software. Using VPN is illegal in: Cuba, Iran, Libya, North Korea, Sudan, and Syria.

Installing Cisco VPN Software

  1. If you have used other VPN software, uninstall it before you install the Cisco VPN software.
    Warning: If you do not uninstall your previous VPN software before you install the Cisco version, you may not be able to connect to the Internet at all.
  2. Download the installer from http://cufs.cit.cornell.edu/vpn/winvpn.exe.
    You will be asked to save the file. Remember the location you choose for the installer.
  3. Double-click the installer, winvpn.exe, to open it.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions.
  5. On the Client Software License Agreement screen, read through the license agreement. Click I accept the license agreement, and then click Next.

  6. Follow the on-screen instructions.
  7. When the installer ends, click Finish.

  8. To complete the installation, click Yes to restart your computer.
