Systems Administration: What We Do

Systems Administration Services is part of the Systems and Operations Division of CIT.

The Systems Administration team manages a server farm of over 500 servers in two raised floor machine rooms in two buildings across campus. We provide administration services for both internal CIT customers, as well as campus customers from other departments.

Systems Administration services cover the entire cycle of server planning, purchase, and administration from getting quotes for server purchases, placing orders for equipment, physically installing servers in the Server Farm, installing the operating system, configuring networking, configuring backups, configuring storage, and userid creation, SFTP, and Secure Samba access, to decommissioning and equipment removal.

The main focus is on the physical maintenance of the server and the software maintenance of the base operating system. Systems Administration does not do application level support. For example, Systems Administration would install the operating system on a server, but would not install, or manage a database running there.
