Overview
Welcome to Cornell University's Residence Hall Network Service (ResNet). This fee-based service provides Ethernet connections to students living in Cornell's residence halls. These dedicated broadband Ethernet connections allow students to connect to the Cornell campus network and to the larger Internet. Connections are present in every residence hall, and are accessible to any student with a personal computer and an appropriate network interface device (Ethernet card). Compared to standard phone dial-ups, average transmission speeds for Ethernet are considerably faster and no phone line is required.
Getting Help
ResNet support is provided by the CIT Contact Center (HelpDesk) in 119 CCC (on the Ag Quad) and reachable by phone at (607) 255-8990 or by e-mail at HelpDesk@cornell.edu. Please visit their site for the Contact Center's Hours of Operation.
Rates and Fees
The ResNet service uses Cornell's Network Usage Based Billing (NUBB) system. Student off-campus network usage is be tracked as the total of all ResNet and Cornell Wi-Fi (RedRover) activity. The network billing threshold for off-campus (Internet) network traffic is 10 Gigabytes per month. Off-campus network traffic beyond 10 Gigabytes total per month will incur an additional charge of $0.0015 per Megabyte. The 10 Gigabyte billing threshold will be measured against the total off-campus network usage for each individual and will include the total usage of all IP addresses attached to each student, both ResNet and Wi-Fi.
Additionally, there is monthly fee for ResNet service. This monthly fee is included in Campus Life housing costs for all undergraduate and graduate residence halls. For fraternities, sororities, and co-ops, this fee is $21.35 per month.
Billing is by the calendar month. Effective as of April 1st, 2007, the monthly fee for fraternities, sororities, and co-ops is pro-rated based on the number of days subscribed.
News & Announcements
6/1/08 - Changes to CU network billing.
If you will be using Cornell’s wired or Wi-Fi (RedRover) networks this summer, or during the 2008-09 academic year, please be advised of these changes: As of June 1, 2008, your monthly Cornell allocation for Internet usage to or from off-campus sites has doubled to 10 GB (gigabytes) per month, and now includes usage via Cornell's Wi-Fi (RedRover) networks. Use of Cornell's web sites and services is not counted.
Usage above 10 GB per month will be billed at the same rate as before -- $0.0015 per additional MB (megabyte). If your usage reaches 10 GB, you will automatically receive an e-mail notice.
All of your usage is now tracked by your NetID, not by IP address. You can check your usage online at any time through the network usage-based billing system (NUBB) at www.nubb.cornell.edu.
