Getting Connected at Cornell

Internet Access

All residence halls offer wired network connection capability. In addition, many campus locations, including most North Campus residence hall rooms, offer Wi-Fi network access through RedRover, Cornell's Wi-Fi service. (For a complete listing of RedRover locations, see the RedRover Coverage page.)

Two RedRover services are available on campus. RedRover-Secure is recommended. It encrypts the Wi-Fi portions of data transmission, and is the more secure choice.

Note: To register an iPhone or iPod Touch, see How to Connect to RedRover-Secure (Wi-Fi).

Register Additional Devices

In addition to connecting a computer to the network, you may want to add other devices such as a game console, an IP phone, a router, or a Netflix-ready device.  Each device must be registered.

Track Your Network Usage

Cornell student network service includes unlimited on-campus and off-campus network traffic. Off-campus network traffic is any network traffic to or from a network connection or site at Cornell that accesses a network location outside of Cornell.

Note: Off-campus traffic over 15 GB incurs a charge. You can find the complete explanation of network-usage charges on the ResNet Fees and Billing page.

Most people do not use more than 15 GB of off-campus traffic for ordinary Internet use. However, if you use file-sharing applications such as BitTorrent, your off-campus traffic can add up quickly. Student network usage is tracked as the combined total of both Wi-Fi usage (over Cornell’s RedRover Wi-wireless network) and wired usage (over ResNet data network).

Downloading or streaming video (YouTube, the NetFlix “watch instantly” service, or Internet TV sites like Hulu or Joost) count toward your totals. Placeshifting—accessing TV provided to your permanent home (or other off-campus location) via a networked device on campus—works like streaming video and also counts toward the 15 GB threshold.

Cornell provides tools so you can track your off-campus Internet usage:

  • The Network Usage-Based Billing (NUBB) system is updated daily. NUBB also allows you to view your monthly patterns.

  • E-mail alerts: Information Technologies (CIT) alerts you if your off-campus usage approaches 15 GB or if your systems show a sudden and significant increase in off-campus network usage—a sign that your computer might have been infected by a virus or otherwise compromised.

Computer Security Requirements for Students

Student Telephone Service

ResPhone is Cornell’s student voice service. Service and fees vary depending on which residence hall you live in. For more information, go to the ResPhone page.

Residence Hall TV Service

DirecTV, an entertainment television service, is available over IP in the university residence halls. This service, and support for the service, is provided by Campus Televideo. To sign-up for DirecTV service, go to the Campus Televideo web site.

If you sign up for DirecTV service, you must register your receiver. To register your receiver, see How to Register a DirecTV Receiver.
