Preparing for Cornell's Switch to Exchange

Starting in September, Cornell Information Technologies will begin switching the email service for faculty and staff to a new Microsoft Exchange system. By late spring 2010, this system will be used for calendars too, instead of Oracle Calendar.

This change will affect all faculty and staff, except for a small number in units that will continue managing separate email or calendar services for now. (This change will also eventually affect retirees and graduate/professional students, at a future date.)

The IT staff in your college, department, or unit will be advising you about plans to move your email account to this new system. Moving email accounts is a multi-part process.

Part One is for all faculty and staff
(except those in departments that are already using Exchange or will keep running their own email systems).

  • Go to Part One so you can continue accessing your email after your email account is moved to the Exchange system.

Part Two is deciding whether to keep using Eudora, Thunderbird, or another email application you use now, or switch to one of the new email applications (Outlook, Entourage, or Apple Mail 4).

Please note that some colleges, units, and departments are making this decision on behalf of their faculty and staff and will advise them regarding their choices.

  • If you've already done Part One, go to Part Two to decide which email application to use.

Part Three is getting your email applications ready for the Exchange system. The IT or computer support staff in your college, department, or unit may be doing Part Three for you. Ask if you don't normally make changes to the software on your computer.

  • If you've already done Part One and know which email application you'll be using with Exchange, go to Part Three to get your email application ready.
