Install Bear Access: Windows

First step: Install the Bear Access infrastructure and the antivirus and security tools. After installing those essentials, you can choose which applications you want to use or install.

Note: The Bear Access infrastructure includes Kerberos libraries which are essential to run Cornell applications that require authentication such as e-mail.

The fall 2009 Bear Access release requires:

  • Windows XP SP2 or higher

Follow these instructions to install and begin using the Bear Access infrastructure and applications.

Download the Bear Access Installer

You can download the Bear Access installer from the web.

You will need 2 GB of extra free disk space temporarily during installation.

  1. Download the installer from http://cufs.cit.cornell.edu/bearaccess/ba2009/ba2009.exe.
    You will be asked to save the file. Save it to your desktop, your downloads folder, or any other location. Remember where you've saved the file.
  2. Locate the installer. It is named ba2009.exe.
  3. Double-click the installer, ba2009.exe, to open it.
  4. In the Security Warning window, click Run.
  5. Continue with the Run the Bear Access Installer procedure.

Run the Bear Access Installer

  1. An InstallShield Wizard window appears. Click Next.
  2. The installer opens. On the first screen, click Continue.
  3. Click Install Bear Access Infrastructure.
  4. In the Welcome window, click Next.
  5. In the License Agreement window, click I accept the terms in the license agreement, then click Next. Note that certain components of Bear Access can not be taken out of the United States.
  6. In the Setup Type window, click Next.
  7. In the Ready to Install window, click Install.
  8. A Status window displays messages while the installer runs. When the InstallShield Wizard Completed window appears, click Finish.
  9. Next you need to install each Bear Access application. In the Bear Access Setup window, click Install Bear Access Applications.
  10. In the Install Bear Access Services window, click the service you want to install, for example, Thunderbird Mail. The installer for that service will open. Follow the onscreen instructions.
  11. When the installer completes, click Finish.

    If you are prompted to restart your computer, do so now. After your computer restarts, continue installing services. Double-click the installer, ba2009.exe, to open it and then continue this procedure starting at step 9.
  12. In the Install Bear Access Services window, click the next service you want to install. When you're finished installing the services you want, click Exit, and then in the Bear Access Setup window, click Exit again.

    If you want to install other services later, the installers are available in the Bear Access uPortal.Cornell channel. Scroll to the bottom of the channel to the Installers folder.
  13. Continue with the Symantec Client Security installation instructions.

After your first installation: To install additional or updated applications or services, expand the Installers folder and download and run the appropriate installer.
