Bear Access: Install Macintosh

The Bear Access channel on uPortal.Cornell provides easy access to online services. Most services are available online; some services and applications require downloading and installation.
First step: Install the Bear Access infrastructure and the antivirus and security tools. After installing those essentials, you can choose which applications you want to use or install.
Note: The Bear Access infrastructure includes Kerberos libraries which are essential to run Cornell applications that require authentication such as e-mail.
The fall 2008 Bear Access release requires:
- Mac OS 10.4 or higher
Follow these instructions to install and begin using the Bear Access infrastructure and applications.
Download the Bear Access Installer
You can download the Bear Access installer from the web.
- Download the installer from http://cufs.cit.cornell.edu/bearaccess/ba2008/BearAccess2008.dmg.
- Double-click the installer, BearAccess2008.dmg, to open it.
- Continue with the Run the Bear Access Installer procedure.
Run the Bear Access Installer
- Double-click the Bear Access 2008 Installer icon.
- In the Introduction window, click Continue.

- In the ReadMe window click Continue.
- In the Select Destination window click the drive on which you're going to install Bear Access, and then click Continue.
- In the next window, to install all of the Bear Access components, select Easy Install from the list, and then click Install. To install one program, select the program name from the list, and then click Install.
- The Installing window displays the number of files remaining
to be installed. You don't need to click anything in this window;
it closes after the last file is copied.
- Next you'll need to run the installer for each component. In the Install window for Fetch, click Continue.
- In the Select Destination window click the drive on which you're going to install the component, and then click Continue.
- In the next window, click Install.
- Repeat Steps 7-9 to install the Kerberos files and Thunderbird.
- You'll see a message that installation was successful. Click Quit.
- Your computer needs to be protected from viruses and other threats. Install Norton AntiVirus to protect your computer. (If you already have an antivirus program and don't want to use Cornell's version, skip the rest of this procedure.) Click the Bear Access via uPortal.Cornell icon in the dock.

- Enter your NetID and password if you are prompted to do so.
- When the uPortal.Cornell window opens, click the Bear Access 2008 tab.
- In the Installers folder, open the Protect My Computer folder, and then click Norton Antivirus for the Mac. The installer is downloaded to your desktop.
- To install the Norton Antivirus program, double-click NortonAntiVirusCorp.English.mpkg. Follow the onscreen instructions.
- When the installation is finished, click Restart to restart your computer and begin using Norton Antivirus.
Start Bear Access
- Click the
Bear Access via uPortal.Cornell icon in the dock.
- Enter your NetID and password if you are prompted to do so.
- When the uPortal.Cornell window opens, click the Bear Access 2008 tab.
- Start any application or service by clicking on it once.
- If this is the first time you've run the application or service, you may have to configure it. Follow the onscreen instructions.
After your first installation: To install additional or updated applications or services, expand the Installers folder and download and run the appropriate installer.
