Symantec Norton AntiVirus for Mac OS X

Install Symantec AntiVirus 10.1 on Mac OS X 10.3 or higher

  1. Before starting to install Symantec AntiVirus, you should first disable and uninstall all other antivirus software such as previous versions of Norton AntiVirus. Multiple versions of antivirus software may interfere with one another.
  2. Download the installer from Cornell's AntiVirus Software Downloads web page, OR do the following:
    1. Log in to uPortal.Cornell.
    2. Click on the Bear Access tab.
    3. Scroll down to the Virus Protection folder.
    4. Click on Install Symantec/Norton Antivirus.
  3. A Welcome window will open. Click Continue.
  4. The window changes to display information about this release of Symantec AntiVirus. Scroll down to read the contents, then click Continue.
  5. The window changes to a license agreement. Scroll down to read the entire agreement, then click Continue. A drop-down box will ask you to agree to the terms of the license. Click Agree.
  6. The window asks you to select a disk where the antivirus software will be installed. Click on a disk icon to select it, then click Continue.
  7. In the Easy Install window, click Install or Upgrade to proceed with installing the software.
  8. Mac OS X's "Authenticate" window will open. Type the passphrase that you usually use when installing software on this computer.
  9. A drop-down box warns that you will need to restart your computer when the installation is done. Click Continue Installation.
  10. A series of installation messages will appear. The installation and optimization of the software takes a few minutes. When the window displays a message that the software was successfully installed, click Logout. Wait for your computer to restart.
  11. Click the Symantec AntiVirus icon in the dock.
  12. Click the LiveUpdate button.
  13. A LiveUpdate window appears. Click Update Everything Now.
  14. Wait for the updates to download. Click Quit.
  15. Symantec AntiVirus is now installed. Use it regularly to protect your computer files. See the instructions in the Scanning for Viruses and LiveUpdate pages.

Install Norton AntiVirus 9.0.3 on Mac OS X 10.2

  1. Before starting to install Norton AntiVirus, you should first disable and uninstall all other antivirus software such as previous versions of Norton AntiVirus. Multiple versions of antivirus software may interfere with one another.
  2. Download the installer from Cornell's AntiVirus Software Downloads web page, OR do the following:
    1. Log in to uPortal.Cornell.
    2. Click on the Bear Access tab.
    3. Scroll down to the Virus Protection folder.
    4. Click on Install Symantec/Norton Antivirus.
  3. Mac OS X's "Authenticate" window will open. Type the passphrase that you usually use when installing software on this computer.
  4. A Welcome window will open. Click Continue.
  5. The window changes to display information about this release of Norton AntiVirus. Scroll down to read the contents, then click Continue.

  9. A series of installation messages will appear. The installation and optimization of the software takes a few minutes. When the window displays a message that the software was successfully installed, click Restart. Wait for your computer to restart.
  10. Click the Norton AntiVirus icon in the dock.
  11. A "LiveUpdate Reminder" window states that your virus definitions appear to be out of date. Click Update Now.
  12. A LiveUpdate window appears. Click Update Everything Now.
  13. An "Updating" window appears. Wait for the updates to download. The Summary window recommends that you restart your computer. Click Restart.
  14. Norton AntiVirus is now installed. Use it regularly to protect your computer files. See the instructions in the Scanning for Viruses and LiveUpdate pages.

Scan for Viruses

  1. Open Norton AntiVirus by clicking the shield icon in the dock.
  2. Highlight the drives you wish to scan. You can select multiple drives by holding down the command key when you click. Command-a will select all drives.
  3. Click Scan/Repair in the lower right-hand corner.
  4. Norton AntiVirus will scan and automatically fix any infected files. The scan will take a while; you'll probably want to do something else while the scan is running.
  5. Norton AntiVirus will then present a list of files it was unable to fix or scan. You can choose to Repair, Delete, or do nothing on a file-by-file basis.
  6. Click Done, and choose Quit from the Norton AntiVirus menu.

Schedule Regular Updates and Scans

  1. Open Norton AntiVirus by clicking the shield icon in the dock.
  2. From the Utilities menu, choose Norton Scheduler.
  3. Click the New button.
  4. To schedule a regular update of Norton AntiVirus and its virus definitions:
    1. Click the Product Update button.
    2. Choose a name for the update task, such as Weekly Update.
    3. Leave All Products selected.
    4. Choose a frequency for updates, such as Weekly.
    5. For a weekly update, choose a mid-week day, such as Wed.
    6. Choose a time late in the day to get the latest updates.
    7. Click Save.
  5. To schedule a regular scan of your computer and its drives:
    1. Click the AntiVirus Scan button.
    2. Choose a name for the scan, such as Hard Drive Scan.
    3. Drag your hard drive icon into the "Select an item to scan" box.
    4. Choose a frequency for the scan, such as Weekly.
    5. For a weekly scan, choose a mid-week day, such as Wed.
    6. Choose a time.
    7. Click Save.
