Responding to Security Issues

If you suspect that your computer has been infected by a virus or broken into, do the following:

  1. If possible, disconnect the computer from the network.
  2. Do not run anti-virus software on the computer, because it could destroy information necessary to investigate the compromise.
  3. Follow the guidelines below to contact someone for help.
  • You should always start with your department’s technical support staff. They are in the best position to offer immediate help and guidance in determining if you do, in fact, have a security problem on your computer.
  • If your department does not have technical support staff, or other arrangements for technical support, contact the CIT HelpDesk (phone 607 255-8990, visit CCC 119, email helpdesk@cornell.edu; see current HelpDesk hours).
  • For emergencies, call the Network Operations Center (NOC) at 607 255-9900. The NOC is staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
