How to Enhance Web Browser Security: Firefox

You can enhance the security of your web browser by following the recommendations below:

Note: These procedures apply only to Firefox. Please see the Internet Explorer or Safari pages for more information about how to enhance the security of those browsers.

Turn on Automatic Updates

Automatic updating is turned on in Firefox by default. To be sure your browser is set for automatic updates, check the Preferences.

  1. On the Firefox menu, click Preferences.
  2. Click Advanced.
  3. Click the Update tab.
  4. Place a check in the box for Automatically check for updates to:
    • Firefox
    • Installed Add-ons
    • Search Engines
  5. Under When updates to Firefox are found, turn on:
    • Automatically download and install the update
    • Warn me if this will disable any of my add-ons

Disable Popups

It's a good idea to disable popups in your browser because many web sites use popup windows to run malicious software.

  1. From the Firefox menu, choose Preferences.
  2. Click Content.
  3. Check Block pop-up windows.
  4. Close the Preferences window.
