Firewall: Windows: Turn On

In addition to antivirus software, everyone should run a firewall. A firewall monitors network traffic into and out of your system and attempts to block connections that appear to be hostile.

CIT recommends using the Firewall built into the Windows XP, Vista, and Macintosh operating systems.

See the About the Windows Firewall page for more information about the capabilities of the Windows firewall and the firewall included with Symantec Endpoint Protection.

Turn on Windows Vista Firewall

  1. From the Start menu, select Control Panel.
  2. In the Control Panel window, click Security, and then click Security Center.
The Windows Security Center window appears.
  3. Click Firewall, and then click Turn on now.

The Windows Firewall is now turned on.

The first time an application launches after you turn on the firewall, Windows may ask if you want to Block or Unblock the application. To allow the application to continue without further notifications, click Unblock.
