To use RedRover, you'll need
- A Cornell NetID and password for RedRover-Secure and RedRover (not required
for RedRover-Guest)
- A wireless card that is Wi-Fi
certified or internal wireless support (for RedRover-Secure, WPA is
required)
Please consider using RedRover-Secure instead of RedRover
whenever possible. RedRover is not secure, and your data transmissions
could be intercepted if you use it. RedRover-Secure protects your privacy by
encrypting your data transmissions.
Setting up your
laptop to access RedRover wireless services
- Ensure that the wireless card's driver has been installed. The driver
enables your computer to communicate with the wireless card. It usually
comes on a CD in the same box as the wireless card, or can be downloaded
from the manufacturer's web site. Install the driver according to the
manufacturer's instructions.
If the driver setup asks you for the wireless network name (SSID),
enter
RedRover-Secure (case-sensitive) for the secure wireless
service; RedRover (case-sensitive) for the not-secure
wireless service; and RedRover-Guest
(case-sensitive) for the guest wireless service. Please note that RedRover-Secure
and RedRover are only available to individuals with a valid Cornell
NetID.
Optional: Install the utility that lets you see at a glance whether
your wireless connection is active or has a problem. Many wireless card
manufacturers provide such a utility. Do not install this utility if
you are using RedRover-Secure. Allow Windows to configure your wireless
connection.
- To set up your laptop for RedRover-Secure, take these additional
steps.
- Take your laptop to any RedRover location.
Open a web browser (such as Firefox, Safari,
or Internet Explorer).
Cornell faculty, staff, and students: The RedRover
registration page will open automatically. If it doesn't, go to
http://wireless-reg.cit.cornell.edu
.
University guests: The terms and conditions page for the guest
wireless network will open. You must agree to these terms and conditions before
you can use the network.
