If you experience problems
with the real player on a Mac or PC:
Player issues tend to be related
to "configuration" and "Plugin" issues. Possibly with browser
or media players.
Browsers
Netscape: Netscape may not know how
to use the .rm, .ram files created by Real.
- If this happens a dialog box will
appear that will ask to "pick application", "save" or
"continue".
- Choose "pick app". You
will be given the opportunity to choose the player.
- Browse to the location of Real
Player on your hard drive. Choose Real.
- Click OK and Real should begin
to open and buffer.
- You should not have to do this
again. If Netscape doesn't remember which application to use, it could be
due to an Operating System issue. Shuting the machine down for a short time
(versus "restarting") may clear up this issue. For persistent issues...
try upgrading to the latest version of Real Player. Real Player will seek
out your browsers and insert the plugins into the correct locations.
Media Players
Quicktime or Windows Media player
may "own" a file format. To re-associate with Real:
For Macs:
- In Real Player, click on "View/Preferences".
- Under the "upgrade"
tab there is a button called "auto re-store settings". This will
prompt you to pick a plug-in to restore. "Smil" is the minimum that
needs to be checked.
- Click OK and quit the player.
- Go back to the "Everything...
(well, almost) document and click on a streaming link. This should launch
the player and begin buffering.
For PCs:
- In Real Player, click on "Tools/Preferences".
- Under the "content/media
types" tab scroll down to "Smil multimedia presentation" This
needs to be "owned by" Real Player. If it is not check the box and
click OK.
- Quit the player. Go back to the
"Everything... (well, almost) document and click on a streaming link.
This should launch the player and begin buffering.
If this did not solve your problem...
try upgrading to the current version of Real Player.
