Installing Printers Under
Windows XP or Windows 2000 (32 and 64 bit)

You need to have Kerberos installed on your computer in order to go through this installation process. If you have Bear Access, you have Kerberos.
(If you're not sure you have it, go ahead and run the Net-Print installer. Step 2 tells you what to do if you get the "No Kerberos" error message.)

1. Downloaded a copy of the Net-Print installer (the file is named Net-Print-2.7.exe).
2. Double-click the installer to launch it. The InstallShield Wizard will step you through the installation process.
• If you don't have Kerberos already installed, you'll get an error message telling you to exit the Net-Print installer, then install Kerberos. Then you can launch the Net-Print installer again.
3. In the Welcome dialog box, click Next to start the installation process.

4. The Processing Steps dialog box lists the steps that the installer will go through as it prepares to install a Net-Print printer. Click Next to continue.

5. Next up is the Destination Location dialog box. The default location to install the various files used by the installer is
   C:\Program Files\Cornell University\Net-Print.
   Using the default location will make it easier for us to help you, should you encounter problems during installation or later. However, you may click on Browse to select a different location.
    

At various points throughout the installation process you may briefly see other windows (white text on a black background) open and scroll and close. This is okay. And it will all be over soon.

6. The installer will check the Net-Print server to see if there are updated drivers available. If you have a firewall (and you do have a firewall, don't you?), it may ask whether you want a program called GetHTTPFile.exe to access the internet. Please say yes (or OK, or "allow once" or a similar choice).
7. Next you'll see the Printer Selection dialog box. Select one printer by placing a check mark next to the printer name you wish to configure for Net-Print usage. (Here's a link to the current complete listing of Net-Print printers on campus.) After selecting the printer, click Next.

You can add as many Net-Print printers as you like by completing these steps, then running the installer again, once for each printer you want to add. Start at Step #2 -- you don't need to download the installer each time. You can also add more printers later by running the installer again.

8. You may receive a warning message like the ones shown below. Click Continue Anyway (Windows XP) or Yes (Windows 2000).

10. The Printer Properties dialog box will automatically open. On the Advanced tab, make sure that the box next to Enable advanced printing features is UN-checked. If this box is checked, you may be overcharged for printing some documents. Click OK.

Just before (or just as) this dialog box opens, you may see an error message from Net-Print like this: Click OK.
