Installing Net-Print Printers Under MacOS 10.3.9
(the final release of Panther)

Notes:

  • These instructions work only with MacOS X version 10.3.9 (the final release of Panther). If you have a version of Panther lower than 10.3.9, you must upgrade first.

  • This printing method will prompt you for your NetID and password if you have not already authenticated yourself to Kerberos.

1. Download Net-Print_OSX_3.4.dmg (simply click on this link and accept the download) On most computers it will automatically decompress and open a volume called Net-Print_OS_X_3.4. Inside that volume is the installer, which is called Net-Print_OS_X_3.4.pkg, as shown below. (If the file -- Net-Print_OSX_3.4.dmg -- does not automatically decompress, double-click on it, then double-click on the icon for Net-Print_OS_X_3.4. )

2. Double-click the Net-Print_OS_X_3.4.pkg file to begin the installation.

3. The first screen will welcome you to the installer. Click Continue.

4. The next screen gives you an overview of the installation process. Click Continue.

5. On the next screen, select the volume where you want the installer installed. This is often called Macintosh HD, but you may have renamed yours. Click once on the desired volume then click Continue.

6. The next screen simply states that you will do an "Easy Install" (this is your only choice at this point). Click Install.

7. Depending on how your computer is configured, you may be asked for your password. Note that this is the password for your Macintosh, not the password you use with Kerberos (with your NetID).

8. Once the installation is complete, you will be shown what to do next, as in the screenshot below. This is really important. You won't have access to the Net-Print printers until you complete these two additional steps!

9. Click on the web address listed on your screen (or on this link: http://net-print.cit.cornell.edu/netprintx-cgi/qfeatures.cgi ) or cut and paste it into your browser. You'll see the web page shown below, where you can find the printer or printers you want to be able to use. The bit of information you need to write down is in the first column, the Queue Name.

10. On your computer, in your Applications/Utility folder, double-click on Net-Print Printer Installer.

11. You may be asked for your password at this point. This is the password for your Macintosh, not your Kerberos password.

12. You'll see the Net-Print Printer Installer window shown below. Pick the printer you want to have available, then click Ok.

You can run the Printer Installer as many times as you like, adding one printer each time. You can also come back to the Printer Installer at a later time to add additional printers if your printing needs change.

Once you've run the Printer Installer, the Net-Print printers you selected will be available to you when you print from any application. You must be connected to the network (either ResNet, RedRover, or through a public port on campus). This screenshot shows how it looks in Microsoft Word.
