Since the dimensions of the room in 318 PHillips Hall would make the traditional computer projection onto a screen at one end of the wall difficult for the entire class to view, CIT Public Computing is using a different approach to display the instructor's information for the whole class.
The instructor's computer is connected to a separate monitor which is also displayed on monitors in between each student's computer. This allows each student to see the instructor's presentation closely and with finer detail. Looking at a monitor next to the student's computer monitor is easier than looking at a projection screen at one end of the room, possibly as far away as 30 feet. Since the height of this room is only 8 feet, the image on a projection screen would be too small for the entire class to see comfortably.
Also, the instructor's station is equipped with a special screen that allows her/him to interact with the programs using a stylus to advance slides, open new windows and highlight areas of the information for emphasis. Click here for a picture of this screen. This gives the instructor freedom from being tied to a mouse, allowing the instructor to teach similarly to using a whiteboard or chalkboard.
