SideCar/Kerberos can't synchronize time with Cornell's time server while running under XP

Problem: While running Windows XP/2000/NT and after recently updating Kerberos to version 5, SideCar/Kerberos complains about not being able to synchronize the time with Cornell's time server.

Solution:

This usually occurs when the person using the system only has a USER privilage. Under this condition, Windows does not allow SideCar to automatically synchronize the clock. To avoid this problem, do one of two things:

  • One way is to open SideCar's option menu and uncheck "Synchronize Time Automatically"
    1. If SideCar is not loaded, goto Start | Run and then type "sidecar".
    2. Right-click on the Sidecar icon and select Options.
    3. Un-check the "Synchronize Time Automatically".

  • Second way is, under Windows 2000, have the administrator allow users to set the clock so SideCar/Kerberos can Synchronize the Clock (You must have Administrative Privilages to do this).
    1. Click Start | Settings | Control Panel .
    2. Double click Administrative Tools.
    3. Double click Local Security Settings.
    4. On the left hand panel of the window, expand the
Local Policies and click on User Rights Assignment.
    5. In the right hand panel scroll down to Change the
      system time
, right-click and then select Security from the drop down list.
    6. In the Local User Policy Setting windows, add Users to the existing list of Accounts.

  • Running Bear Access in User mode under Windows 2000/XP/NT4 will cause other problems when updates are needed, so the system administrator should disable automatic updates under Bear Access also.
