Road Runner Internet Service from Time Warner
Road Runner internet service from Time Warner is a popular choice
for Cornell University faculty, staff, and students living off campus,
but there may be issues with access to a few campus services.
Signing Up:
You can sign up online at www.twcny.rr.com.
After you have filled out and submitted a Web-based form, you will be contacted
by a Time Warner representative to set up an appointment.
You can also call 1-877-892-6977, and set up an appointment on the spot.
Our experience is that calling is faster.
Paying for Your Subscription:
Cornell has no special pricing or sign-up "deal"
with Time Warner. Check the TW Website (www.twcny.rr.com)
for current pricing, and for any special offers which may exist.
Consult the appropriate folks in your department or unit to determine
if/how you will be reimbursed for your personal subscription. Be aware
that we have also seen an inconsistent handling of Cornell's tax exempt
status in billing, as different TW business units handle the Syracuse/Ithaca
area, as opposed to the Southern Tier.
Some Experience:
The Bear Access suite of software, including Eudora, work fine. Please see www.cit.cornell.edu/computer/connect/away/ for tips on using Bear Access and accessing Cornell services via alternate Internet Service Providers. When you use a Time Warner connection, though, your computer
is assigned a non-Cornell IP address. Because of this, you may not be
able to access certain campus resources which are "IP site-locked" -
allowing connections only from computers with a Cornell IP address.
Note that CIT's EZ-Remote service does assign you a Cornell IP address
when you dial-in, even though you are not physically on campus.
You may also be locked out of other departmental resources, like some
servers. We suggest that you discuss this issue with your local network
administrator.
