General Printing Guidelines for the Macintosh

Problem:How do I set up my Printer?

Solution:

Regardless of the type of printer you use, there are a number of things that you will want to check before getting into printing specifics.

  1. Make sure the printer is plugged in. It sounds ridiculous, but start with the basics. If it appears plugged in, it wouldn't hurt to unplug it and plug it back in nice and snug. If you use a USB printer, be sure you plug the printer directly into the computer rather than a hub, if you can.
  2. If you can live without it, try disabling desktop printing on your computer.
  3. Try printing in more than one application. If you can't print in Microsoft Word, but you can print in SimpleText, the problem may not be your printer.
  4. Check for paper jams. Turn the printer off, open it up, and look at the inside to see if scraps of paper are visible in the spool or gears.
  5. Print a test page. Most printers have a test page button or procedure for printing a test page. Check your documentation for more information on printing a test page.
