Agendas - Fall 2007

Wednesday, November 28th, 2007

  1. Followup Discussion*: Proposed University Policy on Web Accessibility (60 min)
Tracy Mitrano, OIT Director of Information Technology Policy
Diane Kubarek, Director, Office of Web Communications

*The Office of Information Technologies and the Office of Web Communications are partnering to co-sponsor a new University policy on making Cornell's Web sites accessible to those with disabilities. Tracy and Diane originally vetted this issue with FABIT on 2/28/07, as part of a larger conversation with various stakeholders.

The most current draft of the policy can be found at: http://www.cit.cornell.edu/policy/drafts/WebAccess.html

Information regarding education and training may be found off of this page:  http://www.cit.cornell.edu/policy/webaccess/

At the request of David Gries, we've put this topic back on the FABIT agenda. David has two issues:

"1. The policy requires courses to be web accessible. My gut feeling is that the faculty will not comply with it. Faculty or their admins may change course pages several times a week, usually under time pressure, and they won't be bothered with accessibility issues. Further, the public does not look at courses pages that much. Course pages are meant for students in the course. The policy should require accessibility only if there is a student in the course that needs it.

    2. Faculty personal pages. These are not required to be web accessible. But these faculty pages are a major promotion for Cornell. Faculty pages are what the public may look at in order to find out about someone, or a department. Therefore, faculty pages SHOULD be made web accessible.

And this is not so hard to do, because they don't change often.

There is also a question of when a faculty page is personal and when it is official. That is not discussed in the policy or discussions of it.

My hope is that FABIT will discuss the issue and draft a letter to be sent to the people who are overseeing the process of making this policy official. "
