CIT currently offers two dial-up services that allow your computer to connect to the Cornell campus network with a modem:
- EZ-Remote requires a subscription and costs a monthly fee, but allows unlimited connection time; however, any EZ-Remote connection that has been idle for more than two hours, or that has been connected for more than 20 hours, will be disconnected.
- Express Lane requires no subscription and costs nothing, but is limited to four 15 minute connections per person per day.
As of Fall 2003, Express Lane is no longer available to faculty and staff. Express Lane remains free and available to students and retirees.
If you are a student or retiree and are not sure which service to choose, start with Express Lane; you can subscribe to EZ-Remote later on if you find you need more time online. To switch from Express Lane to EZ-Remote, you'll need to change a phone number in your modem settings (see the Troubleshooting section).
- From the Start menu, select Control Panel.
- Under the heading Pick a category, click Network and Internet Connections. If you do not see this screen, in the navigation bar on the left, click Switch to Category View.
- Under pick a Control Panel icon, click Network Connections.
- From the menu on the left, click Create a new connection to launch the New Connection Wizard.
- Click Next and proceed to the Network Connection Type window.
- Select Connect to the Internet and click Next.
- Select Set up my connection manually and click Next.
- Select Connect using a dial-up modem and click Next.
- In the ISP name box, type Cornell.
- In the next window, enter one of the following:
On-campus Off-campus Long Distance EZ-Remote 9,254-5600 254-5600 1-607-254-5600 Express Lane 9,254-5656 254-5656 1-607-254-5656 When dialing from a location such as a hotel, you may need to dial 9, to reach an outside line. Click here for more tips on dialing into EZ-Remote long distance.
Remember: EZ-Remote is a paid service, and requires a subscription. Express Lane is a free service that allows limited login time and is available to students and retired staff and faculty only.
- Click Next.
- In the User name box, enter your Cornell NetID (e.g. ewe2).
- As a security precaution, CIT recommends that you leave the Password and Confirm Password boxes blank. Also, do not check Use this account name and password when anyone connects to the Internet from this computer; this prevents others from using your NetID and password to use this connection.
- Select Make this the default Internet connection and click Next.
- If you have Windows XP SP1 (Service Pack 1), you will see an option to Turn on Internet Connection Firewall for this connection, check the box next to this option to turn it on.
If you have Windows XP SP2 (Service Pack 2), the Internet Connection Firewall will be automatically turned on.
- Note: For all Windows XP (SP1 and SP2), after you have set up this connection, you must configure your Internet Connection Firewall to work with SideCar, so that your NetID and password remain secure.
- Find out more about Firewalls and Security.
- Select Add a shortcut to my desktop. Click Finish and proceed to the next section, below.
- A Connect Cornell window may automatically display (see illustration below); if it does not, double-click the Cornell icon on your desktop.
- As a security precaution, CIT recommends that the option to Save this user name and password for the following users should not be turned on. Click Properties.
- Click the Options tab and:
- Select Display progress while connecting, Prompt for name and password, certificate, etc., and Prompt for phone number.
- Set the Idle time before hanging up to 30 minutes or less.
- Click the Security tab and:
- Choose Typical (recommended settings), and under Validate my identity as follows, select Allow unsecured password from the menu.
- Make sure Run script is not selected.
- Click the Networking tab and under Type of dial-up server I am calling, select PPP: Windows 95/98/NT 4/2000, Internet.
- Place a check mark in the box next to Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).
- Click once on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), then click Properties.
- Select Obtain IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically.
- Click Advanced.
- Click the DNS tab and select Append these DNS suffixes (in order), and click Add.
- Enter cit.cornell.edu, and click Add.
- Then click OK to close all windows until you return to the Connect Cornell window.
- You can now connect to the network by entering your password and clicking Dial.
- If you want to connect to the network at a later time, click Cancel and follow the instructions below when you want to dial in.
- Double-click the Cornell dial up icon on your desktop.
- If you did not create a desktop icon, from the Start menu, select Connect To and then Cornell.
- In the User name box, enter your NetID (if it is not already entered).
- Use just your NetID (for example, ewe2), without @cornell.edu, and enter it in lowercase letters.
- You should not need to enter your NetID for subsequent EZ-Remote sessions once you have successfully connected.
- Enter your password in the next field. As a security precaution, do not turn on the Save password option. Use uppercase and lowercase letters exactly as you specified them when you created your password (make sure the Caps Lock key is not pressed!).
- Click Dial.
- After connecting, you can start Bear Access or any other network application.
When you finish using Bear Access services, you should disconnect EZ-Remote properly to ensure that your modem hangs up, releasing your phone line for other calls and opening that campus connection for someone else to use.
- Right-click the modem icon on your taskbar.
- Click Disconnect.
If your modem connection doesn't work, try the following:
First things first - check the easy stuff:
- Is your modem plugged in and turned on?
- Are both ends of the cable that connects the modem to your computer securely in place?
- Is the cable plugged into the "Telco" jack on your modem? It won't work if it's plugged into the "Phone" jack.
- Does your phone jack work?
- Is someone else using your phone line?
Check your modem settings
Dial-up problems can often be resolved by installing a "firmware upgrade" from your modem's manufacturer. To find out whether an upgrade is available for your particular model, visit the manufacturer's web site (the address should be in the manual that came with your modem). For further help troubleshooting your modem problems, check the HelpDesk Modem Troubleshooting page.
Next, configure your Windows XP Firewall to work with SideCar, so that your NetID and password remain secure.
