Subscribe to EZ-Remote, or Choose Express Lane

CIT currently offers two dial-up services that allow your computer connect to the Cornell campus network with a modem:

If you're not sure which service to choose, start with Express Lane; you can subscribe to EZ-Remote later on if you find you need more time online. To switch from Express Lane to EZ-Remote, you'll need to change a phone number in your modem settings (see the Troubleshooting section).

Set Up Your Modem

  1. From the Start menu, select Settings and then Control Panel.
  2. Double-click on the Modems icon and review the list of modems set up on your computer.

    List of modems

  3. If you see your modem listed, click Close and proceed with the next section, Install and Configure Remote Access Service. Otherwise continue to step 4, to install your modem.

If you need to install your modem, then follow these steps:

  1. If your modem is internal, make sure it is correctly installed; if it is an external modem, make sure it is connected and turned on.
  2. Click Add... and follow the on-screen instructions. We recommend that you allow Windows to search for and install your modem automatically. If Windows does not find your modem, you will need to select it manually from the list of those available.
  3. If Windows suggests that you restart your computer, click OK. After Windows restarts, continue with the next section.

Install and Configure Remote Access Service

  1. From the Start menu, select Settings and then Control Panel.
  2. Double-click on the Network icon. A Network window will open.
  3. Click the Services tab. If you see Remote Access Service listed in the Network Services box, click on it, then click Properties..., and proceed to step 4.

If you don't see Remote Access Service listed, then install this software by following steps a through e, below.

    Services List

Do steps a-e only if you need to install Remote Access Service.

    1. Click Add...
    2. A Select Network Service window will open. Click Remote Access Service and then click OK.
    3. After the files have been copied, an Add RAS Device window will open. If your modem does not appear in the list of installed devices, click Install Modem... and follow the on-screen instructions to let Windows detect your modem. If Windows does not detect the modem, select it from the list shown.

    1. Once Windows installs your modem, select it from the list labeled RAS Capable Devices in the Add RAS Device window.
    2. Click OK to close the Add RAS Device window.
  4. A Remote Access Setup window will open. If you have already installed your modem, it should appear in the list of devices. If not, then click Add... and configure your modem and port.

    Remote Access Setup window

  5. In the Remote Access Setup window, select your modem from the list of devices and then click Network...
  6. A Network Configuration window will open. Be sure that the TCP/IP box is checked in the Dial out Protocols section, then click OK.

    Network configuration window

  7. You will be returned to the Remote Access Setup window, select your modem again from the device list and then click Configure...
  8. A Configure Port Usage window will open. Select Dial out only and click OK.

    Configure Port Usage window

  9. Click Continue to close the Remote Access Setup window and return to the Network control panel window, then proceed to Install and Configure TCP/IP (do not click Close yet).

Install and Configure TCP/IP

  1. In the Network control panel, click the Protocols tab.
  2. In the list of Network Protocols, look for TCP/IP Protocol. If you don't see it, click Add..., select TCP/IP Protocol, and then click OK.
  3. Select TCP/IP Protocol in the list of Network Protocols and then click Properties... A Microsoft TCP/IP Properties window will open.
    TCP/IP Protocol

  4. Click on the DNS tab.
    1. In the Host Name field, enter cu-dialup.
    2. In the Domain field, enter cornell.edu.
    3. Click Add... below the box labeled Domain Suffix Search Order. A TCP/IP Domain Suffix dialog box will open. Enter cit.cornell.edu and click Add.
    4. Click OK to return to the Network window.

    Under the DNS tab

  5. Click Close to return to the Control Panels window, then proceed to Configure Dial-up Networking after restarting your computer if prompted to do so.

Note: The IP Address tab will contain IP settings for your network adapter (Ethernet card) if you use an on-campus network connection, or for the generic Microsoft Loop Back adapter for a stand-alone NT workstation. You should not modify these settings because they have no effect on the dial-up connection. Those familiar with Windows 95 may notice the lack of a Dial-up Adapter here. Don't worry: the RAS acts as its own adapter and will not rely on the network adapter settings.

Configure Dial-up Networking

  1. From the Start menu select Programs, then Accessories, then Dial-Up Networking.
  2. If this is the first time you have used Dial-Up Networking, you will see a message about the phonebook being empty. Click OK.
If you have used Dial-Up Networking previously, click New...
  3. Enter Cornell (or any name you desire) in the Entry name field. Check the box labeled"I know all about phonebook entries and would rather edit the properties directly," then click Finish. A New Phonebook Entry window will open.
  4. Click the Basic tab.

    Phonebook Entry, Basic tab

  5. In the Phone Number field, enter:

Stop! Crangle Remember: EZ-Remote is a paid service, and requires a subscription. Express Lane is a free service that allows limited login time and is available to all members of the Cornell community.

  6. Make sure the correct modem appears in the Dial using field.
  7. Click Configure... A Modem Configuration window will open.
    1. Set the Initial speed to the maximum allowed for your modem:

  2. In the box labeled User name, enter your NetID (if it is not already entered).
    1. Use just your NetID (for example, ewe2), without @cornell.edu, and enter it in lowercase letters.
    2. If you are part of an EZ-Remote group, follow your NetID with a dash and the group name (for example, ewe2-1group), instead of just your NetID.
    3. After the first time you connect, you should not need to enter your NetID again.
  3. Enter your password in the next field. As a security precaution, do not turn on the Save password option.
  4. Click OK to begin dialing. You should see a message indicating that your computer is dialing. Once it establishes a connection, you will see a window showing the execution of the dial in script. Your computer will automatically reply to the prompts from the EZ-Remote servers.
  5. Once a satisfactory connection has been established, a dialog box will be displayed. Check or uncheck any options shown if you prefer them set one way or the other, then click OK.

Troubleshoot Problems

If your modem connection doesn't work, try the following:

First things first -- check the easy stuff:

Check your modem settings

  1. Double-click the My Computer icon on your desktop, then double-click the Dial-Up Networking icon.
  2. Right-click on the Cornell icon and select Properties from the pop-up menu.
  3. In the Cornell window, click on the General tab. Check these settings:
    1. Is the Telephone number correct? It should be 254-5600 for EZ-Remote or 254-5656 for Express Lane.
    2. Is the correct modem selected in the Connect using box?

If all the settings are correct and your connection still doesn't work, try reducing your modem's initial speed:

  4. In the Cornell window, click Configure.
  5. In the modem properties window, click on the General tab.
  6. In the Maximum speed box, open the pulldown menu and select a number smaller than the current number:
If 115200 is selected, try 57600
If 57600 is selected, try 38400
If 38400 is selected, try 19200
If 19200 is selected, try 9600
  7. Click OK in the modem properties window, then click OK in the Cornell window.

Look for a firmware upgrade for your modem

Dial-up problems can often be resolved by installing a firmware upgrade from your modem's manufacturer. To find out whether an upgrade is available for your particular model, visit the manufacturer's web site (the address should be in the manual that came with your modem).
