Subscribe to EZ-Remote, or Choose Express Lane

CIT currently offers two dial-up services that allow your computer connect to the Cornell campus network with a modem:

If are a student or retiree and are not sure which service to choose, start with Express Lane; you can subscribe to EZ-Remote later on if you find you need more time online. To switch from Express Lane to EZ-Remote, you'll need to change a phone number in your modem settings (see the Troubleshooting section).

Set Up Your Modem

Run through the first two steps as a check even if your modem is already set up. If you're buying a modem, start at Modem Recommendations.

  1. Select Settings from the Start menu and then select Control Panel.
  2. Double-click on the Phone and Modem Options icon and click the Modems tab to review the list of modems set up on your computer.

Modem list

    1. If you have an external modem, make sure it is connected and turned on; if you have previously installed software for a Palm Pilot or other device connected to a serial port, close that application so that Windows 2000 can locate and configure your modem.
    2. In the Control Panel window, double-click the Add/Remove Hardware icon and follow the on-screen instructions. We recommend that you allow Windows 2000 to search for and install your modem automatically. If Windows 2000 does not find your modem, you will need to install it manually by following the manufacturer's instructions.
    3. Once your modem has been installed, click OK and continue with the next section.

Set Up Dial-up Software

  1. From the Start menu, select Settings, and then Network and Dial-up Connections.
  2. Double-click on the Network and Dial-Up Connections icon.
  3. Double-click on the Make New Connections icon to launch the Network Connections Wizard.
  4. Click Next and proceed to the Network Connection Type window.
  5. Select Dial-up to private network and click Next.

  6. In the Phone Number to Dial window, enter one of the following numbers:

      On-campus Off-campus Long Distance
    EZ-Remote 9,254-5600 254-5600 1-607-254-5600
    Express Lane 9,254-5656 254-5656 1-607-254-5656

When dialing from a location such as a hotel, you may need to dial 9, to reach an outside line. Click here for more tips on dialing into EZ-Remote long distance.

Stop! Crangle Remember: EZ-Remote is a paid service, and requires a subscription. Express Lane is a free service that allows limited login time and is available to students and retired staff and faculty only.

  7. Click Next.
  8. In the Connection Availability window, choose the Only for myself option for this connection to be available only to you. If you select For All Users, you will make the connection available to everyone who uses this computer. Click Next.
  9. In the last window, you will be asked to name this connection. Type Cornell, or a similar, meaningful name and select Add a shortcut to my desktop. Click Finish.
  10. The next window that appears will give you the opportunity to connect to Cornell. Before you connect, check some properties associated with this connection. Click Properties.

  17. If Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) is listed, make sure the box next to it contains a check mark, and skip ahead to the next section, Configure TCP/IP. If Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) is not listed, click Install.
    1. In the next window, double click Protocol.
    2. Selecting TCP/IP

    3. Select Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and click OK
    4. Make sure the box beside Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) contains a check mark, and proceed to the next section, Configure TCP/IP.

Configure TCP/IP

    1. Click once on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), then click Properties.

      select TCP/IP

    2. Select Obtain IP address automatically, and Obtain DNS server address automatically.

    9. Click OK, click OK in the TCP/IP Properties window, and OK in the Cornell window.

Dial In to the Campus Network

  1. Double-click the Cornell dial-up icon on your desktop.
  2. In the box labeled User name, enter your NetID (if it is not already entered).
    • Use just your Network ID (for example, ewe2), without @cornell.edu, and enter it in lowercase letters.
    • You should not need to enter your Network ID for subsequent EZ-Remote sessions once you have successfully connected.
  3. Enter your password in the next field. As a security precaution, do not turn on the Save password option. Use uppercase and lowercase letters exactly as you specified them when you created your password (make sure the Caps Lock key is not pressed!).
  4. Click Dial.
  5. After connecting, you can start Bear Access or any other network application.

Disconnecting from the Campus Network

When you finish using Bear Access services, you should disconnect EZ-Remote properly to ensure that your modem hangs up, which frees your phone line for other calls and frees the campus connection for someone else to use.
  1. Right-click the modem icon on your taskbar.
  2. Click on the button labeled Disconnect.

Troubleshoot Problems

If your modem connection doesn't work, try the following:

First things first--check the easy stuff:

Check your modem settings

    1. From the Start menu, select Settings, and Network and Dial-up Connections, then Cornell (or the name you have given to your Cornell connection).
    2. Right-click on the Cornell icon and select Properties from the pop-up menu.
    3. In the Cornell window, click on the General tab. Check these settings:
      • Is the Telephone number correct? It should be 254-5600 for EZ-Remote or 254-5656 for Express Lane. Remember, Express Lane is available to students and retired faculty and staff only.
      • Is the correct modem selected in the Connect using box?
    4. If all the settings are correct and your connection still doesn't work, try reducing your modem's initial speed:
      • From the Control Panel, double-click on the Phone and Modem Options icon.
      • Select the Modems tab, click once on the modem, and click Properties.
      • In the modem properties window, click on the General tab.
      • In the Maximum speed box, click on the triangle to open the pull-down menu. Select a number smaller than the one that's selected now:
      • If 115200 is selected, try 57600
If 57600 is selected, try 38400
If 38400 is selected, try 19200
If 19200 is selected, try 9600
      • Click the OK button in the modem properties window, then click the OK button in the phone and modem options window.

Look for a firmware upgrade for your modem

Dial-up problems can often be resolved by installing a "firmware upgrade" from your modem's manufacturer. To find out whether an upgrade is available for your particular model, visit the manufacturer's web site (the address should be in the manual that came with your modem).
