CIT currently offers two dial-up services that allow your computer to connect to the Cornell campus network with a modem:
- EZ-Remote requires a subscription and costs a monthly fee, but allows unlimited connection time; however, any EZ-Remote connection that has been idle for more than two hours, or that has been connected for more than 20 hours, will be disconnected.
- Express Lane requires no subscription and costs nothing, but is limited to four 15 minute connections per person per day.
As of Fall 2003, Express Lane is no longer available to faculty and staff. Express Lane remains free and available to students and retirees. If you're not sure which service to choose, start with Express Lane; you can subscribe to EZ-Remote later on if you find you need more time online. To switch from Express Lane to EZ-Remote, you'll need to change a phone number in your modem settings (see the Troubleshooting section).
- From the Start menu, select Settings and then Control Panel.
- Double-click the Modems icon and review the list of modems set up on your computer.

- If you see the make and model of your modem listed here, click OK and skip ahead to the next section, Install Dial-Up Networking.
- Otherwise click Cancel and proceed with the next step.
- If your modem is internal, make sure it is correctly installed. If it is an external model, make sure it is connected to your computer and turned on.
- In the Control Panel window, double-click the Add New Hardware icon and follow the on-screen instructions. We recommend that you allow Windows to search for and install your modem automatically. If Windows does not find your modem, you will need to install it manually by following the manufacturer's instructions.
- Restart your computer if Windows gives you the option to do so. After Windows restarts, continue with the next section.
- Place the CD in your computer's CD drive.
- A Bear Access Setup window will open. Click Continue.
- In the next window, click Windows Me EZ-Remote. Then proceed to step 3, below.
- Click this link: http://cufs.cit.cornell.edu/bearaccess/ezremote/ezr_fall03.exe
- You will be prompted to save the file. Save it in a new, empty folder.
- Copy the file onto a floppy or Zip disk if you need to take it to a computer that does not have a working network connection.
- Double-click ezr_fall03.exe and proceed to step 3, below.
If you have trouble running the EZ-Remote installer, continue with the steps in the next section to set up your dial-up software manually. Otherwise skip ahead to Dial In to the Campus Network.
- A Cornell Dial-up Connectoid graphic and Setup window will briefly appear. You don't need to click anything.
- An Information window will open. Read the text, then click Next.
- A Select Components window will open. Make sure there is a check mark in the box next to Cornell Connectoid. (Warning: If you already have a connection icon named Cornell, a new icon with that name will overwrite the old icon). Click Next.
- If you have never used a dial-up connection before, you'll see a check mark in the box next to Dial-Up Networking. Have your Windows Me CD ready; the installer will ask for it unless the necessary files are already on your hard drive.
- A Modem Pool window will open. Select one of the options offered: 56K Pool for standard EZ-Remote, or Express for Express Lane.
Remember: EZ-Remote is a paid service, and requires a subscription. Express Lane is a free service that allows limited login time and is available to students and retired staff and faculty only.
- A dialog box will ask whether you wish to have a shortcut to the Cornell connectoid on your desktop. Click Yes.
- In the Setup Complete window, click Finish.
- If you installed Dial-Up Networking, you'll see a notice that you need to restart your computer before you can use the new dial-up adapter. Click the radio button next to Yes, I want to restart my computer now and click OK.

- Double-click the Cornell icon on your desktop.
- In the box labelled User name, enter your NetID.
- Use just your NetID (for example, ewe2), without cornell.edu, and enter it in lowercase letters.
- If you are part of an EZ-Remote group subscription, follow your NetID with a dash and the group name (for example, ewe2-1group).
- You should not need to enter your NetID for subsequent EZ-Remote sessions once you have successfully connected.
- Enter your password in the next field. As a security precaution, do not turn on the Save password option. Use uppercase and lowercase letters exactly as you specified them when you created your password (make sure the Caps Lock key is not pressed!).
- Click Connect.
- After connecting, you can start Bear Access or any other network application.
- Right-click the modem icon on your taskbar.
- Click Disconnect.
If your modem connection doesn't work, try the following:
- Double-click the My Computer icon on your desktop, then double-click the Dial-Up Networking icon.
- Right-click on the Cornell icon and select Properties from the pop-up menu.
- In the Cornell window, click the General tab. Check these settings:
- Is the Telephone number correct? It should be 254-5600 for EZ-Remote or 254-5656 for Express Lane.
- Is the correct modem selected in the Connect using box?
If all the settings are correct and your connection still doesn't work, try reducing your modem's initial speed:
- In the Cornell window, click Configure.
- In the modem properties window, click on the General tab.
- In the Maximum speed box, open the pulldown menu and select a number smaller than the current number:
If 115200 is selected, try 57600
If 57600 is selected, try 38400
If 38400 is selected, try 19200
If 19200 is selected, try 9600
- Click OK in the modem properties window, then click OK in the Cornell window.
Dial-up problems can often be resolved by installing a firmware upgrade from your modem's manufacturer. To find out whether an upgrade is available for your particular model, visit the manufacturer's web site (the address should be in the manual that came with your modem).
