Download PPP Networking Software
You don't need to buy any software; everything you'll need has
been site-licensed for everyone at Cornell, and can be downloaded
from CIT's public Appleshare server. Click on the links below to
start downloading.
Warning: These files may take
quite a while to download over a modem connection! An alternative
is to copy the files onto floppy or ZIP
disks from a computer with a fast, on-campus network connection,
such as a computer in a public lab.
First, download two utilities, if you don't already have them:
Next, download the networking software appropriate for your system:
If you prefer, you can download the software:
- using Bear Access:
- Click on Updates & Extras, then on EZ-Remote.
Choose the file named For Mac OS 8.0 & 8.1.
- Click Download in the update notification window.
Wait for the file to download (this may take a while).
- using an FTP client such as Fetch:
- Connect to the host appleshare.public.cornell.edu.
- Choose the following folders: Public, then EZ-Remote,
then Mac OS 8.0 & 8.1, then Download.
- Copy all the files in the Download folder.
Install PPP Networking Software
- Open the Open Transport/PPP 1.0.1 folder.
- Double-click on the Net Install.scr file.
- Click Continue in the "Welcome to the Apple Installer"
window.
- Click Install in the "OT/PPP Installation"
window. If you see a message that installation cannot continue
while other applications are open, click Continue. Wait
for the installation to complete.
- Click Restart in the "Installation was successful"
window. Wait for your computer to restart.
- Proceed to the next section to set up the
control panels so you can use your new software.
Set Up the Control Panels
Before you start using your new networking software, you must configure
three control panels: the TCP/IP control panel,
the Modem control panel, and the PPP
control panel.
1. TCP/IP control panel
- From the Apple menu, choose Control Panels, then choose
TCP/IP.
- In the "Connect via" box, select PPP.
- In the "Configure" box, select Using PPP Server.
- In the "Name server addr" box, make sure these three
numbers appear:
- Close the TCP/IP control panel, and click Save when a
message asks if you want to save this configuration.
- If your TCP/IP control panel does not allow you to make the
selections shown, then you need to reinstall the OT/PPP software.
Make sure your Macintosh meets the requirements
set by Apple for using OT/PPP.
2. Modem Control Panel
- From the Apple menu, choose Control Panels, then choose
Modem.
- On the "Connect via" menu, select the port that your
modem is plugged into.
- On the "Modem" menu, select the type of modem you
have.
- Do additional optional configuration
if you wish.
- Close the Modem control panel, and click Save when a
message asks if you want to save this configuration.
- If your modem is not listed in the Modem control
panel, then you have an unsupported modem. Setting up your modem
may require extra steps. For assistance, call the CIT
HelpDesk at (607) 255-8990.
3. PPP Control Panel
- From the Apple menu, choose Control Panels, then choose
PPP.
- Click on the radio button labeled Registered User.
- In the Name field, type in your NetID.
- In the Password field, you have two choices:
- If you share this computer with others: Leave the Password
field blank. PPP will prompt for a password each time you
connect.
- If no one else has access to this computer: Type in your
NetID password, and check the "Save password" box.
Anyone who has access to this computer will be able to dial
in using your EZ-Remote subscription.
- In the Number field, type the EZ-Remote phone number:
- Click the Options... button at the bottom of the PPP
control panel. An Options window will open.
- Click the Protocol tab. Make sure the box labeled "Connect
to a command-line host" is not
checked.
- Recommended but not required: Click the Connection tab.
The box labeled "Disconnect if idle for __ minutes"
should be checked. Increase the number of minutes to 30.
- Click the OK button to close the Options window and return
to the PPP control panel.
Close the PPP control panel and click Save when a message
asks if you want to save this configuration.
4. Create an alias (optional)
Every time you connect to or disconnect from the network, you'll
need to open the PPP control panel. If searching through the list
of control panels becomes a nuisance, you can save yourself time
by creating an alias for the PPP control panel and putting the alias
in your Apple menu.
- On your hard drive, open the System Folder, then the
Control Panels folder, and single-click on the PPP
icon.
- Choose Make Alias from the File menu.
- A new icon named PPP alias will appear. Rename it PPP
Login/Logout, or choose another convenient name. To make this
entry appear at the top of your Apple menu, insert a blank as
the first character of the name.
- Drag the alias into the Apple Menu Items folder in your
System Folder.
Connect to the Network
- Open the Apple menu and select the PPP Login/Logout alias,
or open the Control Panels list and choose PPP.
- Click the Connect button.
- Enter your NetID password if PPP asks for it.
To remind you that you have an active connection, a PPP icon resembling
a telephone pole will flash on and off on top of the Apple icon
in the upper left corner of your screen. (If you don't like this
flashing icon, there's an option in the PPP control panel to turn
it off.)
Disconnect from the Network
- When you are finished using the network, be sure to disconnect.
This way, you free up your own phone line and release the campus
modems for others to use. Closing Bear Access won't disconnect
you from the network!
- Close all network services that require a network connection
to operate. (Services that don't require a network connection,
such as the Eudora e-mail program, can remain open.)
- Close the small window with your Network ID in it, if such a
window is open on your screen.
- Open the Apple menu and choose the alias you created, or open
the Control Panels list and choose PPP.
- Click the Disconnect button. You'll see the PPP Status
box as PPP disconnects from the network and hangs up your phone.
Where to Get Help
- Open Transport/PPP has a built-in Help system.
- For more documentation of OT/PPP, you can download the OT/PPP
Manual in Adobe Acrobat format.
- If you are running into trouble getting OT/PPP or Apple Remote
Access to work with the EZ-Remote service, please do not hesitate
to call the CIT HelpDesk at (607) 255-8990.
