Mac OS X: Connecting from
Off-campus with a Dial-up Modem

Subscribe to EZ-Remote, or Choose Express Lane

CIT currently offers two dial-up services that allow your computer to connect to the Cornell campus network with a modem:

If you are a student or retiree and not sure which service to choose, start with Express Lane; you can subscribe to EZ-Remote later on if you find you need more time online. To switch from Express Lane to EZ-Remote, you'll need to change a phone number in your modem settings.

Configure TCP/IP

  1. From the Dock, click the System Preferences icon, and in the next panel, click Network.

Or, from the Apple menu, select Location and then, Network Preferences.

If this panel is grey and inactive, click the lock icon in the bottom left corner to activate it.

    Select Configure Modem

  3. Under the TCP/IP tab, select Configure: Using PPP.

  5. In the Search Domains box, enter the following:

  6. Click the PPP tab, and in the Telephone Number box, type one of the following:
      On-campus Off-campus Long Distance
    EZ-Remote 9,254-5600 254-5600 1-607-254-5600
    Express Lane 9,254-5656 254-5656 1-607-254-5656

When dialing from a location such as a hotel, you may need to dial 9, to reach an outside line. Click here for more tips on dialing into EZ-Remote long distance.
Stop! Crangle Remember: EZ-Remote is a paid service, and requires a subscription. Express Lane is a free service that allows limited login time and is available to students and retired staff and faculty only.

  7. In the Account Name box, enter your NetID. As a security precaution, CIT recommends that the Save password option should not be turned on.
  8. Close the Network panel and when prompted, click Save.

Dial In to the Campus Network

  1. While in the Finder, choose Applications from the Go menu.
  2. Open the Internet Connect application.
  3. In the Internal Modem window that will display, enter your password into the Password box. Use uppercase and lowercase letters exactly as you specified them when you created your password (make sure the Caps Lock key is not pressed!).
  4. Connection login window
  5. Click Connect. Your computer will attempt to contact the server, when a connection has been established, the Status will be say Connected, and a Disconnect button will display.
  6. You can minimize Internet Connect to the dock, or quit it without affecting your connection. To quit, from the Internet Connect menu, select Quit Internet Connect.
  7. You are now connected to the Cornell campus network and can use Bear Access and perform network related tasks such as surfing the web or reading e-mail.

Disconnecting from the Campus Network

When you've finished using network related services, you should disconnect properly to ensure that your modem hangs up, freeing your phone line for other calls and releasing the campus connection for someone else to use.

  1. To disconnect, in the Finder, select Go and then Applications, and open Internet Connect.
  2. Click Disconnect.
