Subscribe to EZ-Remote, or Choose Express Lane
CIT currently offers two dial-up services that allow your computer to connect to the Cornell campus network with a modem:
- EZ-Remote requires a subscription and costs a monthly fee, but allows unlimited connection time; however, any EZ-Remote connection that has been idle for more than two hours, or that has been connected for more than 20 hours, will be disconnected.
- Express Lane requires no subscription and costs nothing, but is limited to four 15 minute connections per person per day.
As of Fall 2003, Express Lane is no longer available to faculty and staff. Express Lane remains free and available to students and retirees.
If you are a student or retiree and are not sure which service to choose, start with Express Lane; you can subscribe to EZ-Remote later on if you find you need more time online. To switch from Express Lane to EZ-Remote, you'll need to change a phone number in your modem settings.
Configure the TCP/IP Control Panel
- Open the Apple menu, select Control Panels and then TCP/IP.
- In the Connect via box, select PPP.
- In the Configure box, select Using PPP Server. The IP Address, Subnet mask, and Router address will be supplied by the server and therefore are not displayed.

- In the Modem menu, select the type of modem you have.
- If your modem is not listed in the pulldown menu, consult your modem documentation or the manufacturers web site for information on where to find the modem definition file. If you cannot locate a modem definition file, you have an unsupported modem; in that case, choose one of the US Robotics or Null Modem settings, then continue with the rest of the configuration steps.
If your connection does not work, return to the Modem control panel and try a different setting. You may still be able to use your modem with Cornells dial-up services, but configuring it may require extra steps. For assistance, contact the CIT HelpDesk.
- Close the Modem control panel and click Save when a message asks if you want to save this configuration.
Configure the Remote Access Control Panel
- Open the Apple menu and select Control Panels.
- If you see Remote Access in the list of control panels, select it and proceed to step 2, below.
- If you dont see Remote Access in the list of control panels, retrieve your Mac OS CD and install Remote Access from it.
- A Remote Access window will open. Click the radio button labeled Registered User.
- In the Name field, type your NetID. Use just your NetID (for example, ewe2), without @cornell.edu.
- As a security precaution, leave the Password field blank and make sure the Save password option is not turned on. You will be prompted for it each time you connect.

Disconnecting from the Campus Network
When you've finished using network related services, you should disconnect properly to ensure that your modem hangs up, freeing your phone line for other calls and releasing the campus connection for someone else to use.
- Close all network services requiring a network connection to operate. The Eudora e-mail program, for instance, can be used without a network connection. Click here to find out more about minimizing your connection time.
- Click the Kerberos icon if it is open, and clear your ticket by choosing Destroy Tickets.
- Open the Apple menu, select Control Panels, then Remote Access, and click Disconnect.
Using a laptop? Use Location Manager to manage your connections to the network from multiple locations. For help troubleshooting connection problems, contact the HelpDesk at 255-8990 or helpdesk@cornell.edu.
