For Mac OS 8.5:
Connect Using Apple Remote Access
How to...
Set Up the Control Panels
If the computer you're using has never been connected to EZ-Remote
before, or has been using old MacSLIP software rather than OT/PPP,
then you'll need to configure three control panels: the TCP/IP
control panel, the Modem control panel,
and the Remote Access control panel.
If the computer has been connected to EZ-Remote using OT/PPP
before but you've just upgraded to Mac OS 8.5 or newer, the first
two control panels should already be set up correctly; skip ahead
to the Remote Access control panel.
1. TCP/IP control panel
- From the Apple menu, choose Control Panels, then choose
TCP/IP. The TCP/IP window will open.
- In the "Connect via" box, select PPP.
- In the "Configure" box, select Using PPP Server.
- In the "Name server addr" box, make sure these
three numbers appear:
- Close the TCP/IP control panel, and click Save when
a message asks if you want to save this configuration.
2. Modem Control Panel
- From the Apple menu, choose Control Panels, then choose
Modem. The Modem window will open.
- On the "Connect via" menu, select the port that
your modem is plugged into.
- On the "Modem" menu, select the type of modem you
have.
- Do additional optional configuration
if you wish.
- Close the Modem control panel, and click Save when
a message asks if you want to save this configuration.
- If your modem is not listed in the Modem control
panel, then you have an unsupported modem. Setting up your modem
may require extra steps. For assistance, call the CIT
Helpdesk at (607) 255-8990.
3. Remote Access control panel
- From the Apple menu, choose Control Panels and then
Remote Access. The Remote Access window will open.
- If you don't see Remote Access in your
Control Panels list, then you'll need to download and install
Remote Access before you can continue; see the appendix.
- Click the Registered User button.
- In the Name box, type your NetID.
- In the Password box, you have two choices:
- If you share this computer with others: Leave the Password
field blank. PPP will prompt for a password each time you connect.
- If no one else has access to this computer: Type in your
NetID password, and check the "Save password" box.
Anyone who has access to this computer will be able to dial in
using your EZ-Remote subscription.
- For EZ-Remote, in the Number box, type the appropriate phone
number:
- Click the Options button at the bottom of the control
panel.
- In the Options window, click the Protocol tab.
- In the Use protocol box, select PPP.
- Make sure the box labeled "Connect to a command-line
host" is not checked.
- These two steps are recommended but not required:
- Click the Connection tab (see illustration).
- Check the box labeled "Disconnect if idle for __ minutes"
and fill in 20 or 30 as the number of minutes.
- Close the Remote Access control panel, and click Save
when a message asks if you want to save this configuration.
Connect to the Network
- From the Apple menu, choose Control Panels, then choose
Remote Access.
- Click the Connect button.
- Enter your NetID password if PPP asks for your Remote Access
password.
To remind you that you have an active connection, a PPP icon
will flash on and off on top of the Apple icon in the upper left
corner of your screen. (If you don't like this flashing icon,
there's an option in the Remote Access control panel to turn
it off.)
Disconnect from the Network
- When you are finished using the network, be sure to disconnect.
This way, you free up your own phone line and release the campus
modems for others to use. Closing Bear Access won't
disconnect you from the network!
- Close all network services that require a network connection
to operate. (Services that don't require a network connection,
such as the Eudora e-mail program, can remain open.)
- Close the small window with your Network ID in it, if such
a window is open on your screen.
- From the Apple menu, choose Control Panels, then choose
Remote Access.
- Click the Disconnect button.
Tips
- Tip for iMac and PowerBook G3 owners: Apple has
a free upgrade for your computer's built-in modem that can make
your network connections faster and more reliable. To get the
update, go to Apple's software updates site, read the file Modem_Updater_1.2.1_Info.txt,
and download the file Modem_Updater_1.2.1.smi.bin.
- Open Transport/PPP has a built-in Help system. For more documentation
of OT/PPP, you can download the OT/PPP
Manual in Adobe Acrobat format. If you are running into trouble
getting OT/PPP or Apple Remote Access to work with the EZ-Remote
Service, please do not hesitate to call the CIT
Helpdesk at (607) 255-8990.
Appendix: Download and Install Remote
Access
If your iMac or Mac OS 8.5 system doesn't have a Remote Access
control panel, follow the instructions here to download and install
the software. You don't need to buy anything; the software has
been site-licensed for everyone at Cornell.
Download Apple Remote Access Client
Download from this Web address; the file is compressed, but
will automatically expand:
If you prefer, you can download the software from the Updates
& Extras folder in Bear Access, or using an FTP client such as
Fetch. Connect to the host appleshare.public.cornell.edu
and choose the following folders: Public, then EZ-Remote,
then Mac OS 8.5 or greater, then Download. Copy
the ARA Client 3.1.sea.hqx file from this folder.
Install Apple Remote Access Client
- Open the ARA Client 3.1 folder.
- Double-click on Install Remote Access.
- Click Continue in the "Welcome to the Apple Installer"
window.
- Click Install in the "Client Installation"
window. If you see a message that installation cannot continue
while other applications are open, click Continue. Wait
for the installation to complete.
- Click Restart in the "Installation was successful"
window. Wait for your computer to restart.
- Return to the section on how to set up
the Remote Access control panel, above.
