You get connected but can not send/receive data

Problem: Description

Solution:

  1. If you were able to send/receive data earlier in the session, and it just started, then you may want to try restarting the computer (software modem). Sometimes the drivers and software just need to be reset. Also, if you have a software modem and you disconnect then reconnect later and it does this, it may need to be restarted.
  2. You may want to disable Error Control and Data Compression in the Control Panel -> Modems -> Properties -> Advanced tab. Sometimes you can lose packets if error correction methods don’t match up
  3. In Control Panel -> Modems -> Properties -> Port Settings you may want to lower the FIFO buffers. This causes the modem to more directly communicate with the computer by lowering the amount of characters the modem holds while waiting for the computer to catch up. If it is lower, the computer will pay more attention to it and you won’t lose packets.
  4. If all else fails, try to restrict your modem to the v.34 protocol or 56K x2 protocol (USR modems only) by entering the correct initialization string.

Windows Troubleshooting

Bear Access | SideCar/Kerberos | E-mail | Symantec AntiVirus
Network News | File Transfer Protocol | Telnet | JTF and COLTS

Dedicated Network Connections | Modem Dial-up Connections
