Frequently Asked Questions
about EZ-Remote Policies
The CIT staff who operate the campus modem bank used with the
EZ-Remote software have provided the information below.
- Why is there a fee for the EZ-Remote service?
- Some of this issue is beyond the scope of the staff at Network
Resources to address, because decisions on what services your
tuition dollars fund are made at higher levels within the University.
But, as others have pointed out, it costs money to run a service
of this nature and the fees we charge bring in less than the amount
needed to recover the entire cost of running the service. At some
point university administrators have to draw a line on what services
are paid for by tuition dollars. The rest are recouped by divisions
by charging a fee for the services. Further down the road as high
speed network access becomes a universal need, this may change.
But for now this is where we are.
Why is there no fee for the Express Lane service?
- A minimal level of network access is essential to the Cornell
community to access certain resources such as CUinfo, CoursEnroll
and electronic mail. These services are used fairly universally
and we try to provide a minimal access level for everybody.
Why does it sometimes take a while for someone in CIT to respond
to policy questions posted to cornell.consult.ez-remote?
- This newsgroup, and others in the cornell.consult.* hierarchy,
are intended for technical consulting questions, and the staff
who regularly track them are not necessarily able to answer policy
questions. Those of us who are have a number of responsibilities
extraneous to reading news, and while we make an attempt to address
every customer concern expressed here, it sometimes takes longer
than just a few hours since we may only check into the groups
every few days.
