Disabling call waiting and voice dialing
when using EZ-Remote
If you have call waiting or voice dialing services on your phone
line, you may wish to disable them temporarily while you use
EZ-Remote. If you do not disable these services, your EZ-Remote
connection may be broken when you receive a call on your line.
To disable a service, you enter a special code into the place
where you enter the phone number in your EZ-Remote software. If you
want to disable multiple services, you enter all of the necessary
codes, then the phone number. Do not put spaces between the code(s)
and the phone number. For example, if you want disable only call
waiting and intend to use the phone number 254-5600 for EZ-Remote,
you would use *70w254-5600 instead of just 254-5600 when configuring
EZ-Remote to dial in. If the w code is not supported by your
modem, you could try *70,,,254-5600 instead. The table below provides
further examples of the codes used to disable call waiting and voice
dialing.

Notes for the table:
- You need to create a pause in the dialing sequence so that the
phone number is not dialed until the codes are processed. To
create this pause use w or one or more commas between the
code and the phone number. Use w if your modem supports
that command. If you use commas, you may need to experiment to
figure out how many to use: one comma creates a 1-, 2-, or
3-second delay, depending on your modem type. Substitute one or
more commas for the w in the table above if necessary,
especially if the w code does not disable voice dialing.
- Add "1" followed by the area code 607
if you are dialing in long distance.
- If your telephone exchange is 253 or 254 you should use #4
instead of *70 to disable call waiting.
- If you use rotary dialing instead of touchtone, replace *70
with 1170 to disable call waiting and replace *98 with 1198 to
disable voice dialing.
If the code for disabling a service seems not to work, contact
your local phone company for further assistance -- not all phone
companies use the same codes, although the ones given here are the
most common. If your phone company does not offer codes for disabling
services temporarily, you may need to consider disabling them
permanently or installing another phone line for your modem use.
If you live in a residence hall and have AUDIX service with
stutter dialtone, you need to retrieve all your incoming voice
messages before attempting to connect with your computer.
You may be able to disable services by editing your modem's
initialization (INIT) string if you prefer. Your modem manual may
describe how to enter a code that will overcome interruptions caused
by call waiting.
You may also be able to use "blind dialing" with your modem. If
your modem supports this feature, you can send a command that
instructs it to wait x seconds after going off-hook before it dials
(and thus never wait for a dial tone). For a US Robotics Sportster
modem, try X3 or perhaps X0 or X1 to perform blind dialing.
