EZ-Remote, a service offered by Cornell Information Technologies (CIT), allows members of the Cornell community to connect their desktop or laptop computers to the Cornell Campus Network from anywhere that has a telephone line--on or off campus, in the Ithaca area or around the world.
With EZ-Remote, Cornell faculty and staff members who work at home or travel to conferences or meetings can use the same Cornell services they rely on in their campus offices. Students can use Cornell services from their off-campus apartments, as well as from their homes during vacations. EZ-Remote works by connecting your modem to one of the Cornell Campus Network modems. All you need is a desktop or laptop computer (Macintosh or Windows), a modem with appropriate cables for your computer, a telephone line, and networking software.

Responsible Use of EZ-Remote Resources
- Any EZ-Remote connection that has been idle for more than two hours, or that has been connected for more than 20 hours, will be disconnected. An idle connection is one that is not sending or receiving data. This policy helps ensure that all EZ-Remote users have equitable access to the modems.
When you are not actively using your EZ-Remote connection, you should disconnect from the network to free the campus modems for someone else to use. A few subscribers who artificially maintain their connections for long periods to avoid redialing make it more difficult for everyone else to get a connection. The campus modems are a limited resource to be shared by all EZ-Remote subscribers. The Code of Academic Integrity and the Policy Regarding Abuse of CIT Computers and Network Systems require all members of the Cornell community to "respect ... the finite capacity of computers and network systems by limiting use ... so as not to interfere unreasonably with the activity of other users."
EZ-Remote Terms & Conditions
- You will be asked to agree to the following terms and conditions when you subscribe.
- Your EZ-Remote subscription(s) cannot be transferred or used by another individual.
- You must have a valid Cornell e-mail address.
- You must notify CIT in writing of any change in Cornell affiliation.
- You may terminate your EZ-Remote service online via the EZ-Remote Subscription page, at any time.
- You are responsible for payment of all charges applicable to this subscription. EZ-Remote is a fee-based service and billed on a monthly basis (beginning on the 1st day of each month through the 30th/31st day of the same month). Billing will not be prorated or refunded for mid-cycle transactions.
Policy Reminder: Never Share Your NetID
- You should never allow anyone else to use your NetID and password for access to EZ-Remote, or for any other reason.
Busy Signals during Peak Hours
- EZ-Remote usage is closely monitored so that the number of campus modems can be increased as demand increases. Nonetheless, it's impossible to guarantee that your modem won't ever get a busy signal during peak usage hours (Sunday-Thursday, 7 p.m.-2 a.m.). EZ-Remote usage is lowest in the early morning (5 a.m.-7 a.m.).
Scheduled Network Maintenance
- The Cornell Campus Network undergoes periodic maintenance on Fridays between 5 a.m. and 7 a.m. During that time, you may be unable to connect to the network. If you can connect, you may be suddenly disconnected, so don't plan to do any important work then.

Introduction to Modems 101
To understand what happens when your modem dials the Cornell Campus Network, think of what happens when you use your telephone to call a person.
Dialing in to the Cornell Campus Network works in much the same way, with one important exception: there are multiple "lines" (modems) available to "answer" incoming calls. Cornell's pool of modems answers your incoming call to provide you with a connection to the network. If all of Cornell's modems are in use, your modem will get a busy signal. Find out more about Cornell's modem recommendations.
Connection Speeds
- The speed of modems is measured in bits or kilobits per second (bps or kbps). One kilobit equals 1,024 bits. A bit per second is a unit for measuring how fast data can be transmitted across the telephone lines. The higher the number is, the faster the data can be transmitted.
EZ-Remote currently provides connection speeds of up to 53K bps. Because many factors influence the speed at which your modem connects, your modem may not actually attain its maximum speed.
