Computing at Cornell CIT Services

Crangle Cartoon CIT's Express Lane service offers free, brief dial-up connections to the Cornell campus network and the Internet, for students, and retired staff and faculty. Retirees who would like access to Express Lane, should call the CIT Contact Center (HelpDesk) at 255-8990, to request access.

Express Lane provides:

  • Up to four connections a day
  • Up to 15 minutes per connection
  • The fastest connection speed that your modem and phone line can handle (45 Kbps is typical for a 56 Kbps modem that supports the V.90 standard)

Express Lane is designed for those who only need to dial in for occasional, brief access to campus services (such as checking e-mail). It has a total of 92 modems, and people who are using on-campus phone lines can dial in without being billed for an off-campus call. Express Lane's modem phone number is 254-5656. Click here for some tips for minimizing your connection time.

The service is modeled on free modem services offered by other schools. Similar approaches have proven successful at other schools confronted with the challenge of trying to maintain open access despite the current level of demand.

Express Lane is unlikely to meet the needs of people who use the campus network or Internet extensively. CIT recommends that these people sign up for its EZ-Remote service or obtain network access through an Internet service provider.
