Configuring E-mail Clients to Use Cornell's Electronic Directory
If you installed Bear Access after September 2001, Eudora came ready to use Cornell's Electronic Directory (LDAP) when you search for addresses. If you installed Bear Access before that date, or if you use a different e-mail client, the instructions on this page will get you set up.
Eudora with Windows
- Start Eudora.
- Select Directory Services from the Tools menu.
A Directory Services window will open.
If you do not see the Protocols and Databases section on the right, use your cursor to drag the window pane from the right edge to the center as shown below.

- Look in the Databases section. If you see an entry called something like "Cornell - LDAP" click on the name to highlight it, then click on Modify. See if the settings on the Network tab and the Search Options tab match the two screen shots below. If they do, you do not need to make any changes. If they do not, follow the steps below.
- If there is no "Cornell - LDAP" entry, follow these steps:
- In the Protocols section, click on LDAP then click the New Database button. A Modify Database window will open.
- On the Network tab, fill in the three fields as shown below.

- Click on the Search Options tab. Fill in the two fields
as shown below.

Please note the following:
The first character in the Search Base field is a lower-case letter "o"
There is a space after the comma in the Search Base field.
Here is a LARGE version of the Word-wise Search Filter field:
(|(cn=*^0*)(uid=*^0*)(edupersonnickname=*^0*))
The easiest way to enter this is to highlight it here in your browser and copy it, then paste it into the Eudora dialog box. If you choose to type it in yourself, please check your typing carefully.
There are NO spaces.
The first three characters are open parentheses, vertical line (found above the Enter key on your keyboard), and another open parentheses.
The three tall round characters are zeroes, not upper case letter "O"
There are two close parentheses at the end.
- Click OK.
Eudora with Macintosh
- Start Eudora.
- Select Settings from the Special Menu.
- In the scroll area at the left, scroll down to Hosts.

- For Ph/LDAP Server, enter
ldap://directory.cornell.edu/o=Cornell University,c=US
- For Finger Server, enter
cornell.edu<
- Click OK
- Start a new message, as if you were going to send e-mail to someone.
- In the body of the message type (or cut and paste) the following text
(including the angled brackets):
<x-eudora-setting:7611>
The text you just typed will be underlined, like a link on a web page. Double click on the underlined text.

- In the Change Setting dialog box, change the value to
(|(cn=*^0*)(uid=*^0*)(edupersonnickname=*^0*))
The easiest way to enter this is to highlight it here in your browser and copy it, then paste it into the Eudora dialog box. If you choose to type it in yourself, please check your typing carefully.
There are NO spaces.
The first three characters are open parentheses, vertical line (found above the Enter key on your keyboard), and another open parentheses.
The three tall round characters are zeroes, not upper case letter "O"
There are two close parentheses at the end.
- Click the Set Setting button.
Apple Mail
(For OS X version 10.2 or later)
- Start the Address Book application.
- Open Preferences and click the LDAP tab.
- Add a server, which you can name something like "Cornell LDAP" (the name is for your reference only).
- Enter the following:
Server directory.cornell.eduSearch Base ou=People,o=Cornell University,c=USPort 389Scope Subtree - Save the entry and close Address Book.
Now, in Mail, typing a name in the To: or Cc: field for a new message will start an LDAP lookup on the fly. It will start with people you've corresponded with (like Eudora's history list), then go to Cornell's directory to match names as you type.
Mozilla
- Start Mozilla.
- Under Preferences, choose Mail and Newsgroups, then Addressing.
- Check the directory server box.
- Click the Edit Directories button.
- Click the Add button
- On the General tab, enter the following:
Name: CornellHostname: directory.cornell.eduBase DN: ou=People,o=Cornell University,c=US - Click on the Advanced tab.
- Enter this in the Search filter field:
(|(cn=*^0*)(uid=*^0*)(edupersonnickname=*^0*))
The easiest way to enter this is to highlight it here in your browser and copy it, then paste it into the Eudora dialog box. If you choose to type it in yourself, please check your typing carefully.- There are NO spaces.
- The first three characters are open parentheses, vertical line (found above the Enter key on your keyboard), and another open parentheses.
- The three tall round characters are zeroes, not upper case letter "O"
- There are two close parentheses at the end.
- Click OK.
Now when you click the compose button to create a new message, you can use the address button to look up somebody in the Cornell directory.
