"Computers and network systems offer powerful tools for communication among members of the Cornell community and of communities outside of the university. When used appropriately, these tools can enhance dialog and communications. Unlawful or inappropriate use of these tools, however, can infringe on the rights of others. The university expects all members of its community to use electronic communications in a responsible manner." --Responsible Use of Electronic Communications policy |

Purpose of these guidelinesThese guidelines exist to help the creators of web pages take advantage of this powerful communications tool and avoid the pitfalls that can lead to confusion and complaints. This is not a policy. However, where appropriate, it does point to university policies that govern the use of computers and networks. These policies apply to the web just as they do to e-mail, news, or any other form of electronic communication. Cornell's schools and colleges, as well as individual departments and programs, may have their own guidelines for publishing professional/organizational pages on the web. Check their official web pages for additional information on this subject. Staff should also check with their supervisors before publishing professional web pages.
