Overview

This guide covers the basics of setting up a computer for telecommuting. Since every telecommuting situation is different, there's no one-size-fits-all set of directions.

Be sure to check with your local technical support provider before you do anything, as your unit may have policies or procedures that differ from what is presented here. CIT maintains a web page with contact information for many departments and units, along with the most commonly used commercial Internet Service Providers.

This document covers only the technical aspects of telecommuting. When discussing telecommuting options with your manager, be sure to use the following resources:

HR policies (flextime and flexplace)

IT policies (security and responsible use)

Getting Help

Knowing who to contact for assistance with telecommuting issues can be complicated. Many units prefer to have their users start with local technical support. CIT maintains a web page with contact information for many departments and units, along with the most commonly used commercial Internet Service Providers.

If your question deals with a campus-wide service, the CIT web site or Contact Center are probably the best places to start.

If it deals with hardware or software specifically for your unit or department, contact your local technical support provider.

If it's an issue with connectivity, you may also want to contact your home ISP (Internet service provider).

For issues concerning flextime and flexplace policies, guidelines, reimbursements, data security, etc., please contact your local human resources office.
