Computing Accounts
Cornell Information Technologies (CIT) offers accounts on various types of
computing systems to those who need them for research, course support,
instruction, administration or communication activities. CIT does not offer
general Unix time-sharing accounts. The list below explains the types of
accounts available.
Note:
CIT offers Network IDs
to all members of the Cornell community free of charge. NetIDs
provide access to Internet-based services, including electronic mail.
-
Administrative and Library:
-
Accounts on CIT's IBM 9672-R24 mainframe computer may be obtained by those
needing access to Cornell's various administrative and library computing
functions. Send e-mail to cornellc-admin@cornell.edu including the following information:
NetID, full name, department number, and data/programs the person will
need access to.
-
Research and Courses:
-
Accounts for research purposes and course requirements such as statistical
manipulation and computer programming may be obtained by graduate students
and others with documented needs of this type, if they do not have access
to a suitable system in their departments, units or colleges.
These accounts allow access to CIT's instructional system running UNIX.
Further information about these accounts is available on the
CIT Research Computing Accounts Web page.
-
Instructional Support:
-
Accounts for instructional support purposes such as Web page creation may
be obtained by faculty and teaching assistants with needs of this type.
These accounts allow access to CIT's Instruct system, a Unix machine
located in the Computing & Communications Center. See
Instructional Technology Support for Cornell
Instructors for further details about this type of account.
Accounts for other needs may be available from
CISER, the
Theory Center, or
other colleges and units on campus.
