RedRover users: There are now two SSID (network) names for wireless access (12/21/04)

Over the next year, CIT will be upgrading the services of RedRover, Cornell's wireless network. CIT is currently upgrading the wireless access points in buildings across campus. The new access points, manufactured by Chantry, are 3 to 5 times faster than RedRover's original access points, manufactured by Enterasys.

During this upgrade, RedRover users will need to try both "rover" and "RedRover" (case-sensitive) as the SSID name (network name) to see which one works. The "rover" name is used with the original Enterasys access points. The "RedRover" name is used with the new Chantry access points.

Why two names? Because in some buildings, the Chantry and Enterasys access points are temporarily providing overlapping coverage. If they used the same network name (SSID), they would compete with each other to sign on users, clog the network with their repeated sign-on attempts, and finally bump the users off the network. Assigning one network name to Chantry access points and another one to Enterasys access points prevents this from happening.

Once the access point upgrade is complete, RedRover users will be notified. No completion date is available at this time. Over the next year, CIT will also be improving RedRover by adding more secure wireless services and by adding guest access to RedRover. For more information, e-mail the CIT Contact Center or call them at 255-8990.

Dec. 5 outage: E-mail on Postoffices 6, 8, 9 (12/03/04)

On Sun., Dec. 5, work will be done on CIT's e-mail system. From 8-10 a.m., people who use Postoffice 6 or 8 will not be able to send or read e-mail. From 9-11 a.m., people who use Postoffice 9 will not be able to send or read e-mail.

All messages will be delivered once the postoffices are back in service.

During the outages, CIT will install patch updates on Postoffices 6 and 8, and replace a failed CPU on Postoffice 9.

Not sure which postoffice you're on? Go to the Electronic Directory and enter your NetID (for example, ewe2). Your current postoffice is shown in the "Mail Routing" line.

E-mail mailbox size has increased to 300 MB (11/08/04)

As of Nov. 5, faculty, staff, and students who use CIT's e-mail service can now store up to 300 MB of mail on CIT's servers. Previously, the limit was 200 MB.

This additional storage should be particularly useful to those who check e-mail using:

All of those methods rely on CIT's servers to store mail. At 300 MB, a CIT mailbox includes far more storage than is offered by major commercial e-mail providers and most of Cornell's peer institutions.

CIT made this change after analyzing the usage patterns of people who opt to store their mail on CIT's servers and determining that increasing the mailbox size would not have significant budgetary impact.

OUTAGE: Oct. 10, 5-10am, WebMail, CU homepage, more (10/07/04)

On Sunday, Oct. 10, from 5-10 a.m., many computing services and administrative databases will be down while Cornell Information Technologies does upgrades on equipment. The most widely used services that will be unavailable are:

To minimize the impact of this outage, CIT has scheduled it for a typically low network usage period during Fall Break. We apologize for inconveniencing those of you who will be working then.

CUWebLogin has new look, new features starting Oct. 7 (10/06/04)

Beginning Oct. 7, 2004, CUWebLogin will have a new look, new features, and a new web security certification vendor. CUWebLogin is the web page where you enter your Cornell NetID and password when you access protected web-based services such as WebMail, uPortal.Cornell, Who I Am, and Just the Facts.

One of CUWebLogin's new features is "single sign-on." You can now log in to CUWebLogin just once and then use any other protected services without logging in again. (Some services will still require a second log-in as an added security measure.)

The other new feature is a popup window indicating that you're logged in and reminding you to log out. To log out, close all browser windows (Windows/Unix/Linux) or quit the browser (Mac). Closing the popup window doesn't have any effect.

CUWebLogin's new web security certification vendor is Thawte. Previously it was VeriSign.

EZ-Remote subcriptions go online (08/22/04)

EZ-Remote customers can now subscribe online, renew subscriptions online, and pay securely online using credit cards. EZ-Remote is CIT's fee-based modem/dial-up service.

The date for renewing subscriptions is now Aug. 31 for subscribers who pay by credit card or bursar account. If you do not resubscribe, your service will be terminated on August 31. You may, however, reinstate your service at any time if you miss the August deadline.

For subscribers who pay by department charge, this year, CIT will notify departments when they need to renew. In 2005, the renewal date for departments will also be Aug. 31.

Payment can be made by credit card or bursar account for students, and by credit card or department account for faculty and staff.

If you have additional questions or concerns, please e-mail the CIT Contact Center (HelpDesk) or call 255-8990.

Windows XP users: Update Symantec AntiVirus before installing SP2 (08/22/04)

Microsoft has released Service Pack 2 (SP2) for Windows XP. To make sure it interacts correctly with Symantec AntiVirus, please update Symantec AntiVirus to version 9.0.1. Ideally, you should update Symantec AntiVirus before you install SP2.

If your computer has already been updated with SP2, you may have noticed the new feature called Windows Security Center. This feature indicates the status of all the software that protects your computer from Internet attacks. If you're using an older version of Symantec/Norton AntiVirus, the Security Center will tell you that your virus protection status is unknown. Updating to Symantec AntiVirus 9.0.1 will fix this.

Aug. 5 outage, 5-7 a.m.: Campus network (08/03/04)

On Aug. 5, from 5-7 a.m., campus network connections (internal and external) will be unreliable and spotty at best. During this time, Cornell Information Technologies will be upgrading hardware and software on the core campus network.

CIT has scheduled this outage before standard work hours to minimize its impact. We apologize for inconveniencing those of you who will be working then.

By 7 a.m., all network connections should be functioning normally.

July 18 outage: E-mail on Postoffices 6-10 (07/16/04)

On Sun., July 18, work will be done on CIT's e-mail system. From 5:00 a.m.-noon, people who use Postoffice 6, 7, 8, 9, or 10 will not be able to send or read e-mail. All messages will be delivered once the postoffices are back in service.

Estimated period of time each postoffice will be unavailable (estimates only; subject to change):

  • Postoffice 8............5 a.m.-7 a.m.
  • Postoffice 6 & 7......7:30 a.m.-10 a.m.
  • Postoffice 9 & 10.....9:30 a.m.-noon

During the outage, CIT will install patch updates on the postoffices. Not sure which postoffice you're on? Go to the Electronic Directory and enter your NetID (for example, ewe2). Your current postoffice is shown in the "Mail Routing" line.

Change in outbound e-mail routing takes effect July 1 (06/28/04)

As of July 1, 2004, e-mail software such as Eudora or Microsoft Outlook can no longer use "cornell.edu" or "router.mail.cornell.edu" to route outgoing mail. This step is yet another way for CIT to keep its e-mail system from being abused by spammers.

Your settings are most likely correct if you weren't using Eudora before 2000, or if you have reinstalled Eudora (including the "eudora.ini" or "Eudora Settings" file) since 2000. If you only use WebMail or the uPortal.Cornell e-mail channel, you are not affected by this change.

To check in Eudora, go to the Tools menu (Special menu on Macintosh) and choose Options (Settings on Macintosh). Click the Sending Mail icon and look at the "SMTP server" field.

  • If you read your e-mail on campus or by connecting through EZ-Remote or Express Lane, this field should be blank. (You can also use the full name of your postoffice, such as "postoffice9.mail.cornell.edu".)

  • If you connect through an Internet service provider such as Road Runner, it should have the name of your Internet service provider's SMTP server. Or you can leave it blank if your ISP allows. In that case, be sure to check your Cornell e-mail before you try to send any messages.

If Eudora's "SMTP server" field contains "cornell.edu" or "router.mail.cornell.edu", you will get "Connection Refused" errors when you send e-mail. To fix this problem, make the changes described above. If you're a faculty or staff member who doesn't usually maintain your own computer, please consult with your department's local support providers. Otherwise, if you need help, please call CIT's Contact Center at 255-8990.

May 9 outage: E-mail on Postoffice9 (05/05/04)

On Sun., May 9, work will be done on CIT's e-mail system. From 6:30 a.m.-noon, people who use Postoffice9 will not be able to send e-mail, or receive e-mail sent during the outage. All messages will be delivered once Postoffice9 is back in service.

During the outage, CIT will patch Postoffice9 to current standards and attach additional disk space.

Not sure which postoffice you're on? Go to the Electronic Directory and enter your NetID (for example, ewe2). Your current postoffice is shown in the "Mail Routing" line.

May 2 outage: E-mail on Postoffice10 (04/29/04)

On Sun., May 2, work will be done on CIT's e-mail system. People who use Postoffice 10 will not be able to send or receive e-mail from 6:30 a.m.-noon. All messages will be delivered once Postoffice10 is back in service.

During the outage, CIT will perform operating system maintenance on Postoffice 10 and update the patches to current standards.

Not sure which postoffice you're on? Go to the Electronic Directory and enter your NetID (for example, ewe2). Your current postoffice is shown in the "Mail Routing" line.

CornellC, mainframe users: Limited processing Apr. 5, 12, 19 (04/01/04)

If you use CornellC or other systems on the mainframe, please avoid doing batch processes or large online or IRIS requests for the next three Mondays, Apr. 5, 12, and 19, particularly from 7:30 a.m.-noon. Your cooperation will help student course enrollment go more smoothly. Each enrollment period begins on a Monday, so that's when demand is heaviest.

Performance on CornellC and other mainframe systems may be lower than normal during these time frames, and the following systems will be unavailable: ZAX, Test for Natural developers, and Y2K test lpar.

Find free Internet access ports at Cornell (03/24/04)

Finding the hundreds of free Internet access ports located around the campus just got a little easier. You can now search by building to see exactly where the ports are. The ports are typically in classrooms, computer labs, kiosks, public areas of libraries, and other locations not used exclusively by a single department or unit. The Office of the Provost and the Office of Information Technologies (OIT) fund the maintenance of these ports as part of their commitment to increasing opportunities to access network services and the Internet.

Mar. 26-30 outage: Several administrative systems (03/24/04)

On Mar. 26-Mar. 30, an upgrade will be made to Cornell's PeopleSoft system. Work will begin at about 11 p.m. on Fri., Mar. 26, and will finish by 7 a.m. on Tues., Mar. 30.

During this time, several campus systems will be unavailable:

  • Employee Essentials
  • PeopleSoft system
  • Net ID Admin client
  • Position and Employee Data Lookup (PEDL)
  • Student Employment System (SES)
  • Warning and Termination Letters (WTL)
  • Actuate: reports will be viewable but users will not be able to run new reports

Feb. 29 outage: E-mail on Postoffice8 and Postoffice6 (02/26/04)

On Sun., Feb. 29, work will be done on CIT's e-mail system. People who use either Postoffice8 or Postoffice6 should anticipate being unable to send or receive e-mail from 7 a.m.-noon. All messages will be delivered once the postoffices are back in service.

During the outage, CIT will be replacing the Postoffice8 server with a new one. Once that is done, CIT will patch the Postoffice6 server.

Not sure which postoffice you're on? Go to the Electronic Directory and enter your NetID (for example, ewe2). Your current postoffice is shown in the "Mail Routing" line.

Feb. 27-Mar. 1 outage: Several administrative systems (02/26/04)

On Feb. 27-Mar. 1, maintenance will be done on Cornell's PeopleSoft system. Work will begin at about 9 p.m. on Fri., Feb. 27, and will finish by 7 a.m. on Mon., Mar. 1.

During this time, several campus systems will be unavailable:

  • Employee Essentials
  • PeopleSoft system
  • Actuate on-demand reports
  • Net ID Admin client
  • Position and Employee Data Lookup (PEDL)
  • Student Employment System (SES)
