General Information - First the disclaimer: how this information is used is the direct responsibility of the individual and/or group using it. When in doubt, ask the appropriate expert.

Equipment: UL (Underwriters Laboratory), product testing for everything from VCR's to desks. ANSI (American National Standards Institute), electrical and mechanical compatibility between products. OSHA (Occupational Safety and Hazards Administration) sets safety and health standards for the workplace. Consult with Cornell Environmental Health and Safety.

Network: Cornell University adheres to BICSI standards and those standards must be met in installations that connect to the Cornell network backbone. Consult with Cornell Network and Computing Systems.

Access and ADA: UFAS (Uniform Federal Access Standards) and ADAAG (Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 Accessibility Guidelines), define facilities requirements. Accessibility must be incorporated into your new space. Supplemental systems for hearing and visual impairments, may be required. At the state level (New York) check out Accessibility to Technology. Consult with Cornell Office of Equal Opportunity.

Construction: This NYS Code Enforcement page is a good starting point. The NYSUFPBC (New York State Uniform Fire Prevention and Building Code) is available on CDROM, as searchable text. Issues may come up in your project that relate to NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) (which includes the NEC (National Electric Code)), that will impact your decision making.
Consult with Cornell Planning, Design and Construction.
