Classroom Design Guidelines
Philosophy - Some recommended concepts that should be followed when designing classrooms are:
- Keep it simple and flexible. Technology should be easy to use.
- Create many economical smart classrooms instead of a small number of expensive technology showcase rooms.
- Get faculty, staff (various disciplines), and students (if practical) involved early on in the design.
- Think long term - a room may be renovated every 15-20 years. Install conduit and cabling that accommodate future needs.
- Good design is not an accident, and students deserve the best possible learning environments.
Reference Materials and Recommendations
- The Classroom Technologies group has adopted the Classroom Design Manual - 3rd Edition (authors from seven universities) and the College Classroom Portfolio (Dr. Daniel Niemeyer, University of Colorado) as the basis for Cornell guidelines. Both contain detailed information on classroom design principles and technology that should be used as a reference by architects, engineers, and project managers.
The Classroom Design Manual can be ordered from Dr. Sue Clabaugh at the University of Maryland for $20 (see
order form)
and much of the College Classroom Portfolio information can be found at
the Smarter College Classrooms Home Page.
- Cornell guidelines are also centered around redefined classroom tier levels.
- Future classroom technologies should emphasize the standardization of equipment across campus and the establishment of a good support infrastructure for faculty/staff.
