uPortal.Cornell E-mail Channel

Composing & Sending Messages

Clicking on the Compose icon on any E-mail Channel screen will bring you to the screen pictured here:

Fill out the To, Cc, and/or Bcc fields in any of the following ways:

  • Type in valid e-mail addresses (if you want to enter more than one address in a field, separate them with commas)
  • Type in a nickname you've created in your Address Book
  • Click on the To, Cc, or Bcc button. A window showing your address book will open. Put checkmarks in the desired column(s), then click Done.

You can include up to five attachments, with a total size limit of 3 MB. You should also know that when your outgoing message is encoded (transport encodings are the information that allows your message to be safely sent and read.), the size increases a bit. This means that, for example, an attachment that is only 2 MB in size may push the total message size above 3 MB. If you try to attach a file that is too large, you'll get an error message and the file will not be attached to your message.

To attach a file:

  • Click Browse...
  • Find the file you want to attach then click Open
  • Click Add (if you've already attached at least file, this will appear as "Add Another")

Enter your message text in the large gray area. (If you've set up an automatic signature file in the Mail Preferences area, you'll see it in a second gray box below the main text area. You can edit your signature.)

Please take note of the Reset timeout button and countdown timer near the top of the window. When the countdown timer reaches zero, there will be a brief communication between your computer and the uPortal.Cornell server. You will not lose any information, but your typing may be interrupted for a few seconds. Some users prefer to click the Reset timeout button before the timer runs out, perhaps between sentences, so that there work isn't unexpectedly interrupted.

Click Send when you're ready. A copy of your outgoing message will be put in the folder you specified in Mail Preferences.
