uPortal.Cornell E-mail Channel

Read Mail Icon

After clicking on the Read Mail icon in the initial channel display or on a specific folder from the Folder display, the E-mail Channel will show four sections.

Across the top are icons for several areas within the E-mail Channel.

  • Inbox (where you are now if you clicked on the Read Mail icon on the initial display, and where new messages are usually delivered)

  • Folders

  • Compose

  • Mail Preferences

  • Check for new mail (updates your Inbox and folders)

  • Address Book

Find & Organize Messages

The next section is a white bar with several tools for finding and organizing messages.

  • A Search icon
  • A dropdown list of your folders (for moving and storing messages once you've marked them)
  • A "Jump to" box (limited usefulness, since the messages aren't numbered, but you can quickly move through your messages this way)
  • Arrows to move forward or backwards through your Inbox one page at a time

Message List

The main part of the E-mail Channel shows the messages in the current folder. You will see this screen if you clicked on the Read Mail icon, or if you clicked on Folders and then selected a specific folder.

You can sort your messages on any column by clicking on any column heading.

  • Read: shows the status of the message:
  • A closed envelope means that you have not yet read this message. The sender's name will also appear in bold text.
  • An open envelope means you have read this message.
  • An open envelope with a small red arrow pointing left means you have replied to this message.
  • Sender: who the message came from. If you have not yet read a message, the sender's name will also appear in bold text.
  • Subject: the subject line of the message. If the message has attachments, a paperclip icon will appear just to the left of the subject.
  • Date: the date and time the message was received. By default, messages are sorted with the oldest messages appearing first.
  • Size: the total size of the message including any attachments

You'll also see a checkbox for each message at the far right (next to the Read column). Use these boxes to mark messages you want to delete or move.

Reading a Message

To read a message, click on its subject, and the message will open.

Clicking on any name in the From, To, or Cc lines will open a screen to create a new address book entry for that name.

Clicking on the name of an attachment will open that attachment.

To reply to this message, click Reply or Reply All (which also sends a copy to everyone who received the message).

To forward this message to someone else, click Forward. You can edit or add to the message or subject line; you will need to supply the To address.

Clicking on Delete will move the message to the Trash folder. (You can recover messages from the Trash if you have not emptied or expunged the Trash folder.)

Clicking on Expunge will immediately and permanently remove the message. Expunged messages can NOT be recovered.

To move this message into a folder, select from the File in Folder dropdown list, then click Move.

To return to the folder view, click on the name of the folder at the right side of the white bar just above the From and To fields.

Select & Delete Messages

Immediately below the last message are selection and deletion options (followed by a repeat of the uppermost section of the screen).

Click Select all on page to put a checkmark next to all the the messages on this page (you can then delete, expunge, or move the marked messages).

Click Unselect all to remove all checkmarks.

Click the trashcan icon next to Delete to move all marked messages to the Trash folder. (You can recover messages from the Trash if you have not emptied or expunged the Trash folder.)

Click the trashcan with an X icon next to Expunge to immediately and permanently remove the message. Expunged messages can NOT be recovered.

Deleting a message FROM the Trash folder is the same as expunging it. It's gone. Forever.
