Views in Thunderbird

Views are a quick way to zoom in on just the messages that interest you most in the folder you have open.

The View drop-down list is part of the Search Bar, which appears just below the Mail Toolbar and above the Message List in the main Thunderbird window. If the Search Bar is not visible, from Thunderbird's View menu select Toolbars then Search Bar.

When you select an item from the View drop-down list, Thunderbird will only display the messages in the current folder that match the item you selected. The rest of the messages are still there, but are hidden.

To go back to displaying all the messages in this folder, select All from the View drop-down list.

Let's look at your View choices, which are divided into four sections:

All - displays all messages in the current folder

Unread - displays only the messages you have not yet read

The second section shows each of the labels you can use -- Important, Work, etc. When you choose one of these, only the messages with that label will be displayed. (What's a label?)

The third section is made up of common filters. Thunderbird comes with the five shown here -- People I Know, Past 24 hours, etc. You can add your own selections to this list. Keep reading. (What's a filter?)

Save View as a Search Folder - this turns the View you currently have selected into a Search Folder. (What's a Search Folder?)

Customize - This allows you to create new views the same way you create filters. The new views you create are added to the Views drop-down list. Please see our Filters page for more information on creating a filter.
