Quick Search in Thunderbird

Quick Search lets you perform simple searches on just the folder you have open. This can be especially helpful for people who tend to leave most of their messages in the Inbox. It's also helpful for use with any folder with lots of messages.

The Quick Search box is part of the Search Bar, which appears just below the Mail Toolbar and above the Message List in the main Thunderbird window. If the Search Bar is not visible, from Thunderbird's View menu select Toolbars then Search Bar.

Before you begin typing in the Quick Search box, you'll see, in light gray letters, which parts of the messages in this folder will be searched. To see all your choices, click on the magnifying glass to see the full drop-down list, as shown here.

Once you've selected the areas you want to search, type part of the name, address, text, etc. you want to find in the Quick Search box. When you pause typing, Thunderbird will search the current folder for messages that match what you typed, and display only those messages. The rest of the messages are still there, but are hidden.

To go back to displaying all the messages in the folder, either clear the text from the box or click the red X icon that appears when you've entered text.

There are two special items on the Quick Search drop-down menu.

  • Find in message will search only the one message selected in the message list. Your search term will be highlighted in the message in the message pane. (What's a message pane?)
  • Save View as a Search Folder - this turns the quick search you just did into a Search Folder. (What's a Search Folder?)
