Optional Migration Tools for Thunderbird

Many people find the tools built in to Thunderbird to be sufficient, but they do have a few shortcomings. When you migrate mail using the built-in tools, your messages do not retain

  • their status: Unread, Read, Forwarded, Replied
  • their label: To Do, Personal, Important, etc. (see our Labels page for more information)
  • their priority: Highest, High, Normal, Low, Lowest

There are other, third-party tools that will handle these details. Here are a few that people on campus have told us they've used:

  • Eudora Rescue [Windows] - handles messages and mailboxes/folders
(Eudora Rescue is a command-line utility, which means it does not use the familiar mouse-based interface. Instead, you type in commands. All the other utilities listed on this page do use the normal interface.)
  • EmailChemy [Windows and Macintosh] - handles messages and mailboxes/folders
  • Eudora Mailbox Cleaner [Macintosh] handles messages, mailboxes/folders, and address books

CIT does not officially recommend or support any of these utilities. We are pursuing the possibility of obtaining a site license, but for now, these utilities are strictly do-it-yourself.
