Folders in Thunderbird

By creating folders (and subfolders and subsubfolders) you can store your messages in a way that makes sense to you: by date, by sender, by topic, etc.

To create a folder:

  1. In the Folders area on the right side of the Thunderbird window, highlight the account, mailbox, folder, or sub-folder where you want the new folder to live.
  2. Right-click and select New Folder (or New Subfolder) from the drop-down menu.
  3. In the New Folder dialog box that appears, type the name of your new folder. The drop-down list under Create as a subfolder of lets you pick where you want to put this folder. If you selected the "parent" folder in step 1, this should already show the folder you selected.
  4. Click OK.

Your folder has been created.

You can move messages from one folder to another by dragging the message into the target folder. You can also use the Message menu commands.

You can move an entire folder by dragging the folder icon into another folder. The folder you moved will appear as a child of the folder onto which you dragged it. The messages will still be inside the folder you moved.

To move the contents of an entire folder (without creating a new child folder), open the current folder, highlight all the messages (press Ctrl-A on your keyboard), then drag them into another folder. The old folder will now be empty, and can be deleted if you no longer need it.
