Setting PC Pine 4.5.x to use SMTP Authentication

CIT does not recommend or support PC Pine for accessing Cornell's central mail system (the "postoffice" servers). CIT supports Mozilla Thunderbird and Eudora, both of which are available as part of Bear Access. CIT strongly encourages using Thunderbird, with Kerberos authentication enabled, for reading your e-mail. CIT also supports two web-based clients, WebMail and the uPortal.Cornell eMail channel.

If you installed the version of PC-Pine that has support for MIT Kerberos, it will automatically attempt to establish a Kerberos connection if you have configured Pine to use Kerberos for reading your mail.  Otherwise, it will use TLS authentication.

You must update your SMTP-Server entry to point to authusersmtp.mail.cornell.edu.

  1. Start PC-Pine then type S-Setup followed by C-Configure
  2. Move the cursor to the smtp-server entry.
  3. Type C-Change Value
  4. In the Change field smtp-server list entry: enter authusersmtp.mail.cornell.edu
  5. Press return
  6. Type E-Exit Setup
  7. Reply Y to accept the changes.
  8. Exit and Restart PC-Pine.
