Setting Microsoft Outlook Express to use SMTP Authentication

CIT does not recommend or support Microsoft Outlook Express for accessing Cornell's central mail system (the "postoffice" servers). CIT supports Mozilla Thunderbird and Eudora, both of which are available as part of Bear Access. CIT strongly encourages using Thunderbird, with Kerberos authentication enabled, for reading your e-mail. CIT also supports two web-based clients, WebMail and the uPortal.Cornell eMail channel.

(If you elect to use Microsoft Outlook Express you will also need to enable TLS support to encrypt your password when it is sent to the server for authentication. You can find tips for increasing your password security at Best Practices for Outlook Express.)

  1. Go to Outlook Express's Tools menu and choose Accounts.
  2. In the Accounts window click on the Mail tab.
  3. Click once on the existing Post Office entry to highlight it and then click the Properties button. This will bring up the Properties dialog box for that entry.
  4. Click on the Servers tab.
  5. Enter authusersmtp.mail.cornell.edu into the Outgoing mail server (SMTP) field.
  6. Under Outgoing Mail Server, place a check mark next to My server requires authentication.
  7. Click on Settings.
  8. Select Use same settings as my incoming mail server user Logon Information.
  9. Click OK to close the Outgoing Mail Server dialog box.
  10. Click on the Advanced tab.
  11. Place a check mark in the This server requires a secure connection (SSL) box under Outgoing mail (SMTP).
  12. Click OK
