Setting Netscape Communicator to use SMTP Authentication

CIT does not recommend or support Netscape Communicator for accessing Cornell's central mail system (the "postoffice" servers). CIT supports Mozilla Thunderbird and Eudora, both of which are available as part of Bear Access. CIT strongly encourages using Thunderbird, with Kerberos authentication enabled, for reading your e-mail. CIT also supports two web-based clients, WebMail and the uPortal.Cornell eMail channel.

(If you elect to use Netscape Communicator you will also need to enable TLS support to encrypt your password when it is sent to the server for authentication.)

  1. Go to Netscape Communicator's Edit menu and choose Mail&Newsgroups Account Settings.
  2. In the Mail&Newsgroups Account Settings window click Outgoing Server (SMTP)
  3. Set the Server Name to authusersmtp.mail.cornell.edu
  4. Place a check mark next to Use name and password
  5. The User Name should be your NetID
  6. Under Use secure connection (SSL) select Always
  7. Click OK button to close the Settings window
