Setting Your E-mail Client to Use SMTP Authentication

If you are using a "fat" e-mail client (that is, one that requires software other than a browser installed on your computer), you need to make sure it is set to use "SMTP Authentication" for sending messages. This security measures helps ensure that your computer is not being used to send messages without your knowledge or permission.

The Cornell e-mail service now supports authenticated SMTP. On February 8, 2006 the service was made mandatory. If you're suddenly having problems sending e-mail, this is probably why. Read on to find out how this affects you and how to tweak your settings.

If you are using browser-based e-mail, such as WebMail or the uPortal.Cornell eMail Channel, you do not need to change any settings.

This setting only applies to computers communicating on the Cornell campus network (or when using Cornell as your ISP through EZ-Remote or Express Lane) and using Cornell's mail servers. If your e-mail settings show you using "postofficeX.mail.cornell.edu" (where X is some number) for your mail server, you need to make these changes. If you are using another ISP (such as RoadRunner, AOL, or Lightlink) and your mail server does not have "cornell.edu" in its name, you should not change your e-mail client settings.

IMPORTANT NOTE: If

  • you are using Windows
    AND
  • you are using a fat client (see the opening paragraph above)
    AND
  • you are using Symantec AntiVirus (SAV) Corporate Edition as distributed by Bear Access

you will need to configure SAV's Internet E-mail Auto-Protect by UNchecking Enable Internet E-mail Auto-Protect. This setting must be turned off because it does not support TLS/SSL out-going SMTP connections. Here are instructions for configuring SAV.
(This will NOT adversely affect the safety of your messages, since Symantec still scans any attachments as they are prepared to be sent by Eudora, and our mail system scans outgoing mail for viruses.)

It is also important that you use SAV version 10, which is the version currently distributed to the Cornell community. Visit the CIT Contact Center (HelpDesk) in the CCC building or call 255-8990 for assistance.

Additional Information for Network Administrators and the Technically Inclined

On this page you'll find links to instructions for setting a variety of e-mail clients to use SMTP Authentication. Thunderbird and Eudora are the clients distributed by and recommended by CIT. The other clients listed here are NOT supported by CIT, nor do we recommend their use.
